Have you seen this chart? I first read one of the Watch books, which is why I loved Discworld immediately. Pratchett evolved as a writer so much, the subseries make all the difference.

This is a guide to the subseries Terry Pratchett wrote within his Discworld series. If the first one you read doesn't immediately, grab you, one of the others probably will.

#Unshelfie This book was worth losing the only bookshelf I had. My dying grandmother gave it to me. My parents heard that and demanded it. A date invited me home to keep discussing #TheScienceofDiscworld They have matching bookshelves. I have someone who values me and books more than furniture.

Have you seen the charts showing the subseries? They're a good way to decide whether to begin with the first, or with one of the themes that appeals to you the most.

In the generous left pocket of my dangerous blue coat, I carry seditious leaflets. Fairness, kindness, common sense, and equality have long been the enemies of oppressors. I've added empathy, due process, and birthright citizenship. Credit due to Sharon Owens, for her poem "Dangerous Coats."

The series grew better over time, and I've found that I get a lot more out of the later books each time I reread them. Rereading the Watch books might be a good place to start. I still refer to this chart to follow the subseries.

Discworld changes a lot as Pratchett evolves as a writer. Some of his best books for Young Adults are the Tiffany Aching ones. Most people can find a subseries they love:

The series evolved a lot, and he wrote on themes that are more or less subseries. This is a good guide to use.

Keep descending. You'll be glad you did. Have you seen this reading guide? It's the best way to choose which Discworld subseries would suit you, and in what order.

There are subseries that a lot of people find to be a good intro. I first read of The Watch books. They're labeled in a way that makes it easy to see what to expect, though you should know that his writing got more serious over time.

One of Terry Pratchett's best quotes.

032

Windrake @windrake.bsky.social · 04/02/2026

That's one with the heaviest themes. It isn't a good starting point for most people. There are subseries, like The Watch and The Witches and The Industrial Revolution. I'd recommend choosing one of those.

Choose the subseries that appeals to you. Many people like the Watch books the most.

Granny Weatherwax. This quote descibes the mindset that's guiding me toward old age.

Carpe Jugulum. STP distilled all the wisdom you need to escape mind control and all other abuses: “Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.” Bad relationships, cults, and religions count on people not understanding it really is this simple.

There are subseries. I recommend choosing one based on what this guide describes.

This explains why my grandfather wouldn't let my grandmother vote, why my stepfather wouldn't let my mother work, and why my ex tried to stop me from finishing my degree.

"The way my mother always explained it, the traditional man wants a woman to be subservient, but he never falls in loe with subservient women. He's attracted to independent women. "He's like an exotic bird collector," she said. "He only wants a woman who is free because his dream is to put her in a cage." -Trevor Noah, Born a Crime
