(archive: 2014) Evaluating the effectiveness of an ultrasonic acoustic deterrent for reducing bat fatalities at wind turbines
Abstract. Large numbers of bats are killed by wind turbines worldwide and minimizing fatalities is critically important to bat conservation and acceptance of wind energy development. We implemented a 2-year study testing the effectiveness of an ultrasonic acoustic deterrent for reducing bat fatalities at a wind energy facility in Pennsylvania. We randomly selected control and treatment turbines that were searched daily in summer and fall 2009 and 2010. Estimates of fatality, corrected for field biases, were compared between treatment and . . .

Offshore wind turbine foundations may cool ocean surface by mixing seawater #SCT
New research within the PELAgIO ECOWind project has revealed how offshore wind farms can influence ocean temperatures and mixing, and why their effects depend on local conditions. As offshore wind farms become an increasing part of the U.K.’s renewable energy future, scientists are working to better understand how they interact with the marine environment. A team of scientists, led by NOC’s Michela De Dominicis, has found that while offshore wind turbine structures can alter ocean mixing and temperature, their effects . . .

Abstract: A combination of model simulations and field observations collected in 2023 and 2024 near Seagreen, Scotland’s largest Offshore Wind Farm (OWF), is used to assess when, where and by how much (physical) changes induced by OWFs structures become detectable and environmentally relevant. Seagreen has the deepest (> 55 m) fixed bottom foundations of any OWF in the world (in 2026), and in offshore deep (> 50 m) waters there is the potential for OWFs structures to perturb natural ocean mixing and modify seasonal . . .

The Kodiak Electric Association owns, operates, and maintains an isolated grid. The system runs on hydro (85%) and wind (15%, with flywheels and battery storage systems). KEA also maintains diesel generation facilities as back-up. The system entails 6 active substations, 19 distribution feeders, 33 miles of transmission lines, and 350 miles of distribution lines which serve approximately 6,000 customers (~13,000 people). The Ministry of Defence has objected to plans to install 200-metre-high wind turbines in a North Yorkshire beauty spot over fears they would cause major disruption to RAF operations. Proposals for Hope Moor Wind Farm, which will straddle picturesque areas of County Durham and the Yorkshire Dales popular with walkers, include 23 wind turbines reaching 200 metres above ground level. Such is the size of the proposed development, it has been deemed a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project [NSIP], meaning it . . .

Labour will tear up planning rules to make way for wind turbines that the Government admits could interfere with defence radar systems. Under net zero plans, businesses, schools and farms would be able to install wind turbines close to 100ft (30 metres) high without needing planning permission to “lower their bills and make the best use of their land”. A 25-year-old legal loophole which excuses power generation companies from paying council rates must be closed, representatives of one regional council say. Abstract: Wind farms may have two broad potential adverse effects on birds via antagonistic processes: displacement from the vicinity of turbines (avoidance), or death through collision with rotating turbine blades. Large raptors are often shown or presumed to be vulnerable to collision and are demographically sensitive to additional mortality, as exemplified by several studies of the Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos. Previous findings from Scottish Eagles, however, have suggested avoidance as the primary response. Our study used data from 59 GPS-tagged . . .

Efficacy of Painting Wind Turbine Blades as a Mitigation Measure to Reduce Bird Collisions in a Mediterranean Wind Farm #ESP
ABSTRACT: One of the most notable impacts of wind energy is bird mortality due to collisions with wind turbines, making it necessary to adopt measures to prevent or mitigate this impact. In recent years, studies have been carried out to test the efficacy of painting wind turbine blades to increase their visibility and forewarn birds, thus preventing collisions. To corroborate these studies in other site- and species-specific settings, we report on a long-term experiment (2012–2024) performed at the El Ruedo . . .

Abstract: Co-locating aquaculture with Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) is a novel global energy sustainability policy driver. However, trace elements (TEs) from turbine corrosion-protection systems could generate significant ecosystem, economic, and human health risks. We calculate annual inputs for current European OWF capacity (30 GW) as: 3219 t aluminium, 1148 t zinc and 1.9 t indium, but these will increase ~12× by 2050, eclipsing known discharges. However, a paucity of industry data makes it impossible to compare water and sediment TE concentrations at operational OWFs . . .

(archive: 2018) Comment to the Iowa Utilities Board #IA
MidAmerican Energy and all wind companies operating in the state of Iowa are and have been avoiding the regulation of the Iowa Utilities Board. That point of law is being argued in court so I will not address it here. If wind installations did go through the proper approval process of the IUB I do not believe they would be allowed. We are commenting on this docket to have our objection on record. Proving need The entire idea that we . . .

Review of Veltheim 2018, 2019 and 2022: Australian Southern Brolga – Breeding Home Range Modelling and GPS Tracking #AUS
Why this review? The Endangered Australian Southern Brolga (Antigone rubicunda) is a problem for the wind industry because it impedes the rollout of wind farms across Western Victoria. Previous guidelines restrict wind farm development, but the Government now uses Veltheim et al 2019 as the reference standard for Brolga modelling. This review raises questions about the usefulness and relevance of Inka Veltheim’s work for that purpose. The Victorian Government and wind farm proponents claim Veltheim et al 2019 provides the . . .

Considering hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) home ranges to assess the impacts of development projects
Abstract Renewable energy development plays an important role in mitigating climate change, but poses challenges to biodiversity. The hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius), a protected arboreal mammal, is increasingly at risk due to wind turbines being located into forested areas more frequently. This study theoretically examines the effects of clear-cuts on hazel dormouse home ranges. The home range data of two seasons of a long-term monitoring in Lithuania was digitised using QGIS. The home ranges were intersected with simulated clear-cuts of . . .

(archive: 2016) Study on a hypothetical replacement of nuclear electricity by wind power in Sweden #SWE
Abstract. The Swedish electricity supply system benefits strongly from the natural conditions which allow a high share of hydroelectricity. A complete supply is, however, not possible. Up to now, nuclear power is the other workhorse to serve the country with electricity. Thus, electricity production of Sweden is basically CO₂-free and Sweden has reached an environmental status which others in Europe plan to reach in 2050. Furthermore, there is an efficient exchange within the Nordic countries, Nordpol, which can ease possible . . .
