A real successful 1A day here on campus. Heavy hitters. Big student turnout. Engaged questions. My notes for the academic freedom panel is a sort of Cliff Notes of how I approach this thing. This is it. My whole talk.
Notes app reads: Neoliberalism weaponizes bias to justify austerity. Austerity creates corporate universities. Corporate universities are unhealthy organizations. Unhealthy organizations cannot inculcate or defend academic freedom. Without academic freedom to check administrative power, corporate universities will translate austerity into financialized predation. Predation undermines public trust in higher education. Death spiral accelerates.

Can you tell whether the #ideas in a piece of writing came from a human or an AI? As AI writing becomes common, policies on AI use focus on who came up with the ideas in the text rather than who wrote it. AI detectors answer the latter, not the former. We release #IdeaLens, a detector of AI ideas.

as people much more knowledgeable than me have pointed out, some of this is about the interfaces and harnesses (which can be changed so that some uses suddenly vanish, others prioritized) and some of it is about underlying LLMs whose training remains secretive.

beyond “don’t be stupid”* ai literacy is a completely meaningless term that makes it sound like there are rules that users could learn that will improve the uses of the tools. *don’t be stupid covers everything from “don’t put in personal info” to “avoid becoming convinced chatGPT is a new deity”
2141
will pooley @willpooley.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
ai “literacy” is impossible with commercial LLMs, because they are black boxes you can “learn” all the tricks you want to use them more “efficiently” but the developers are not going to tell users how the models have been aligned and they don’t have to tell them when they change this either.

wherever you are, the people who are teaching students to end their work by flagging all its limitations need to be STOPPED but on the other hand i must recognize this technique provides balance and shows fair mindedness so maybe my post was pointless after all THE END

Parents in Metz apparently promised children that if they were well behaved then they would take them to a big square in central Metz on Saint Sylvestre’s Day (31 December) to see a man with a nose for every day of the year (Van Gennep, Manuel de folklore français, p.3017)

i have a secondhand jeffrey archer story from an artist i know. wealthy clients can often “try out” art in their homes and if they don’t like it, they don’t buy it. the story goes that JA basically used this as a way to redecorate for parties for free, then returned it all after.

‘’Reading’ is a set of skills that we can and should teach students in class.’ Absolutely! I’ve been thinking even more deliberately recently about the importance of practical close reading (fundamental to the study of English Lit!) in the classroom. Gotta show students the magic in action!!
