But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

Here's how I like to run a campaign in an established setting: I kill Luke Skywalker. I find a load-bearing character and kill them in the first session. The player characters are the Marty McFly of their universe. The moment they drop in, the timeline changes. Other thoughts on canon by Pris:

Frequency compared to overall content length is an important factor. I also think of acronyms and terms in common use in the hobby, such as the common OSR (hurr hurr) use of "AC" or "saves" or "HP" (even when the hipsters want to call it "hit protection"). Unique term? Spell it out.
