And what’s with the cheers from the crowd? Also, while I understand your point about reading his comments as saying it could be worse, there’s also a clear element in his tone and cadence of “those democrats trying to get your support by crying about gas prices can get nuked- that’ll show them!”

Park district website has been corrected to show closing time for Jackson Park as 11pm (they claim 9pm was just an error) and an OPC representative has confirmed all outdoor areas of the campus are supposed to be open until park closing time. CC @sharrows.bsky.social

Also our regional bike share system should be called NITAbike

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
A regionally accepted and widely deployed OV-fiets style bike-share program (iNITAbike!) can be an anchor in the design of that safer, more accessible active transit

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
...for an active transit and public transit upgrade worthy to call, in retrospect, an early touchpoint with a new era for regional mobility, one that will ultimately introduce Chicagoland to modern regional rail and see a large modeshift away from car trips, helped by safer active transit everywhere

Following skyrocketing transportation costs, a hot stormy smoky summer, world leading congestion numbers, and cost-of-housing crisis, the people of Northeastern Illinois are eager to see the plans laid out in the Cook County bike share study brought to fruition. But they're also eager for more

Especially if one considers the urbanized topology of the region. docked and dockless hybrid systems have existed in pockets in Chicago’s urban fringe (in McHCo, Fox River Valley, the far South Side in 2018 pilot, and Divvy (ebikes can be paused), none have had rental periods of 24 hours.
110
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
While Divvy style systems may make sense for several inner ring burbs, the advantages from a user point of view of bike-share that's checked out and returned from a fixed station but can be used dockless, with the certainty that the same bike will be with you all day (or up to 3 full days) are clear
100
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Most bikes are checked out for less than 1 day, though it’s not uncommon for people to use them for multiple days at a time, either because they are spending the night away from home, or because they plan on returning to their home station the next day.

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Rather than supporting only short point-to-point rides that require pay per use (or use time limits usually on the order of 45 minutes) like Divvy bikes, OV-fiets bikes are checked out for 24-hour periods at a time, renewable for 24-hours at a time for up to 3 days (or 1 week, with penalties).
100
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The other problem with the Cook County Bike Share Study is that it lacks consideration of a Dutch National Railway style bike-share (OV-fiets), which is a hybrid dock and dockless system that has pricing based on the 24-hour period. So how about: iNITAbike (or PTTBikes- Public Transit to Trails)?

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The Cook County document did include interviews with Kane County’s Fox River Bike Share, but treated it with the same disinterest in terms of partnership as it did with Detroit, Omaha, or Philadelphia. But the Fox River is in this region, connected to the same mobility system as Cook County.

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
By Illinois statute, NITA has the authority to use its current appropriations to maintain bikeways and trails and must cooperate with other governmental and private agencies in bikeway and trail programs. NITA & its partners are also eligble for grants from IDOT/feds to establish & expand bikeshare
100
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
But there are two fundamental problems with the study. First, it does not have a regional enough perspective. This is no fault of Cook County’s- they are one county. But we are a region where nearly half of us live in collar counties. NITA has the authority to bring about truly regional bike share.

In August of this year, Cook County produced an important report on the future of bike share in Cook County. It makes clear the benefits of bike share, shows map and street level design schema for introducing bike share docks, and provides an excellent framework for considering dock siting priority.

This is priceless. Check out how local news is reporting on Sen Eric Schmidt’s clown-show grilling of Jack Smith. They found Jack Smith at the game… “Top corner, section 109, row 1. In fact, that seat doesn’t even exist in Atlanta.”

Guests visiting from the UK did this crazy thing last week where they 1. Looked at platform information when boarding at 51st/53rd and 2. Assumed it was correct. I understand they got some good exercise running down and then up the stairs to make their train!

another gate in Solti garden could provide egress from (and entrance to!) Track 1, but fully locked ~100% of the time. Meanwhile there’s active construction going on, more about to start, and probably some electrical systems that are still hot 100+ years after installation. What could go wrong?

Is the emphasis on DRIVERS meant to suggest that you don’t want people hauling the guides on trains and/or bikes?

Record global PWAT is driven by global temperatures and ENSO, not the distribution of evapotranspiration on land, but throwing fuel on the fire by raising an ungodly shit ton of corn definitely doesn’t make a lick of sense. support farmers and rural communities but not the ethanol subsidy psychosis!

Very nice. I’m especially impressed that the nearby undocked list gives names of apartment buildings (“Sadonia Apartments”) or public places (“Harper Court”) where available, and not just addresses.

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
not at the top of the priority list, but I wonder if NITA could nudge CPS to add Metra to their school locator/profile pages’ Public Transit info. It infuriates me every time I see it. Sayre (0.5 miles to Mont Clare) isn’t the most egregious example of CPS’s total Metra erasure, but it is one! Blue?

williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
What’s that role in the private sector though? there’s nothing quite like it, esp at this stage of NITA. not questioning your decision not to pursue it, but seems like a pretty exciting job, and not rocket science. it’s also clear from the listing that a higher salary could be negotiated.

With the Mobility (or whatever they’re called- ala Montreal, New York, DC, Chicago, etc) bikes? Anyway I’m skeptical- operations on maintenance and rebalancing seem a lot more complicated. And we had them for a while, on at least one occasion

I find I can go about as fast (max speed) on acoustic divvys- but will grant you that I can’t accelerate nearly as fast so the full juice does save a lot of time in some circumstances (it also keeps me far less sweaty)
010
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
If they aren’t clear (sorry): 1. $6? That’s nothing! Try accidentally leaving your acoustic divvy on 57th st for almost 10 hours (and yeah- nobody touched it, though it was unlocked) 2. Choose to only pay for ebikes in very limited circumstances

Chicago's lakefront trail is incredible - but the official route to get downtown? An absolutely terrifying trip down lower Randolph! People biking deserve better access between Chicago's downtown and lakefront, and you can help make it happen.

Mayor Johnson and his environment commissioner Tovar use the Meigs Field Massacre as a case for acting boldly against data centers in the name of nature, health, and green space. They should also use it in the name of transforming our massively polluting mobility system. Get better on NITA, MBJ!

This has me wondering about the origins of the website (and I think maybe some park signs?) saying 9pm. I notice it as an edit on the a Wikipedia page in February 2021- can't get a history of the Park District site. But I wonder (genuinely) if it is indeed a conspiracy by OPC
110
williamreed.bsky.social @williamreed.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
thought so too but the 9pm closure time in fact predates the Obama center by several years (maybe decades). Burnham is open until 11pm which I assume is the source of our confusion. And of course before this year no one enforced a 9pm closure time at Jackson Park (and still don’t if not at OPC)

Absolute joke that the 36 Hours in Chicago article has 2/3 “Key stops” immediately on the Metra Electric and doesn’t mention it in the “Getting around” section. Did they visit these places and not ask- can I ride that train? Disgusting!

The article also quotes another physician (in emergency medicine) at Northwestern and cites a Johns Hopkins study. I appreciate that additional research studies would be nice, but I’m with you that input from pediatric surgeons, emergency physicians, and Johns Hopkins researchers is legit reporting!

if you look at stats since 2021 (through 2025), Chicago’s homicides fell by 47%, LA’s by 42%, and NYC’s by 37%. Johnson ran on a public safety platform and should absolutely be noting his success (and yes also that we have a long way to go)
