People call Andy Burnham a socialist, but politically he's often closer to the One Nation tradition of Macmillan than to the Labour left. His worldview is communitarian: • Strong public services • Regional investment • Civic institutions • Social responsibility • Pragmatic government

If you took one of Thatcher's wets like Ian Gilmour or Peter Walker and dropped them into today's politics, they'd probably find more common ground with Andy Burnham than with much of the post-Brexit Conservative right. Politics has shifted more than people realise.

Hot take: Andy Burnham often sounds closer to old One Nation Conservatism than many modern Conservatives do. Housing. Infrastructure. Civic pride. Regional development. Strong public services. Community over market dogma. Harold Macmillan would recognise it instantly.

Funny how much of Andy Burnham's agenda would have sounded familiar to Thatcher's "wets". Regional investment, strong public services, infrastructure spending, pragmatism over ideology, and a close relationship with Europe. More Macmillan than Thatcher in many way

Nothing says "we've understood the voters" quite like responding to significant election defeats with the exact attitudes that helped produce them.

The Conservatives talk about learning lessons. The trouble is that the lessons many of them have chosen bear little resemblance to what the electorate actually said.

The most remarkable thing about recent Conservative election losses is not the defeats themselves. It's the apparent determination of some in the party to treat every loss as evidence they should change even less.

I wonder why Badenoch couldn't say that London benefitted from Brexit 🤔 The reality is that neither London nor any other region in the UK has benefitted from Brexit - the opposite is the case. That's why our polling with YouGov shows that 628 out of 632 constituencies want to rejoin the EU.

Kemi Badenoch refuses to say if Brexit has benefitted London
The Tory leader insisted that voters were not interested ‘in having a row’ over the debate to rejoin the EU

Every election defeat is a message from the electorate. The Conservatives keep opening the envelope, ignoring the contents, and acting surprised when the next one arrives.

The lesson many voters wanted the Conservatives to learn was simple: understand why people left. The lesson they appear to have learned is: blame the voters and carry on as before.

After multiple electoral setbacks, you'd expect some soul-searching from the Conservatives. Instead, we're getting the political equivalent of putting fingers in ears and shouting louder.

The Conservative Party seems determined to learn absolutely nothing from its election defeats. Voters said "change", the response was "double down". Losing isn't the problem. Refusing to listen is.

When workers unite, organise and demand a fair share of the wealth they create, they are accused of class politics. Yet protecting inherited wealth and corporate privilege is class politics too. It is simply the class politics of the powerful. #Socialism #WorkersRights

Capitalism turns education into a market, healthcare into a commodity and housing into an asset class. Socialism insists that essential human needs should never depend on ability to pay.

A society should be judged not by the wealth of its richest citizens but by the security, freedom and opportunity enjoyed by its ordinary people. That is the socialist test of success.

The real division is not between public and private. It is between democracy and concentrated power. Socialism extends democracy from politics into the workplace and the economy itself.

Socialism is not about making everyone equal. It is about ensuring that no one has so much wealth that they can dominate society while others lack the basic necessities of a dignified life.

The wealthiest depend on roads, schools, hospitals, utilities, laws and workers funded by society. The idea that success is entirely individual is one of capitalism's most persistent myths.

The purpose of an economy should be human wellbeing, not endless profit. If people work full time and still struggle to afford food, energy and housing, the economy is serving capital, not humanity.

Workers are told there is no money for higher wages, yet there is always money for dividends, executive bonuses and shareholder returns. The issue is not scarcity. It is who controls the wealth society produces.

A handful of corporations controlling food, energy, housing and finance is not a free market. It is private power without democratic accountability. Socialism seeks democracy in the economy as well as the ballot box.

Every pound cut from healthcare, education and social care is eventually paid for through poverty, poor health and declining opportunity. Public services are not a burden. They are society investing in itself.

Under capitalism, housing is treated as an investment. Under socialism, housing is a human right. Homes should exist to shelter people, not to generate profit for landlords and speculators.

Right-wing economics promises that wealth will trickle down. Decades later, wealth has trickled up while wages stagnate, housing becomes unaffordable and public services struggle. The experiment has failed.

The cost of living crisis is not an accident. Energy firms make profits. Landlords raise rents. Corporations increase prices. Workers are told to accept lower living standards. The system is working exactly as capitalism intends.

Every billionaire is evidence not of economic success, but of economic imbalance. No one earns a billion pounds alone. Wealth on that scale is built on collective labour, public infrastructure and the work of countless others. #Socialism

Capitalism creates wealth, but concentrates ownership of that wealth in fewer and fewer hands. Workers create value. Shareholders collect the rewards. Socialism demands that those who produce society's wealth have democratic control over it.
