Not to be a biased old thinking their generation had the best soundtracks but c’mon ‘90s soundtracks are the undeniable pinnacle of the artform, yeah? Exhibit for the defense no. 1,995: The Muffs, Velocity Girl, Jill Sobule, acoustic Radiohead, Counting Crows, Beasties, Coolio, Bosstones, etc. 🩷

Right?!? Will Vinton would’ve been so proud 😂

The voices and guitar tones on this album are textbook ‘90s bliss for me. It’s evergreen awesome to my ears but for some reason it manages to double woo me with a little extra sparkle in the fall. Chris Cornell’s voice was such a one-of-one gift.

Man, you’re gonna make me wait on pins and needles now! The whole set just looks so well done and the music looks insanely good.

Dude, it looks so sick! Not only are the three live/extras LPs absolutely packed with goodies but even the box art looks SO GOOD! Stoked to add this one to the collection, especially that full Old Grey Whistle Test DVD! They did this one so solid.

It’s really worth the pick-up (especially the 2010 reissue w/ a few bonus tracks). All but two songs are Gamble-Huff and Ronnie Baker’s bass is unbelievable on every single cut. SO GOOD! 💙

‘I Miss You’ by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Super solid 7-song LP but also houses the crown jewel of Teddy P doing “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Also, ‘I’m in Love Again’ by Patti LaBelle and ‘Back Stabbers’ by the O’Jays.

Bringing out the heavy autumnal artillery today. Petty at some of his unbridled best. So many buzzy, wide-open amps and dreamy low-lit sonic corners to hang out in on this layered moody gem.

Such a classic! Maxwell absolutely nailed his Unplugged (and after only one album to work off of)!

First slightly crispy fall breezes in Chicago this morning (at least before more rain comes in, ugh). I don’t know if this song is exclusively about fall but it’s not not about fall. Always a nice autumn season opener for me.

Maxwell’s MTV Unplugged. He took all the vocal wizardry, rhythmic fluidity, and impenetrable grooves of Urban Hang Suite and flawlessly elevated them in a live setting by playing the audience like an instrument itself. He also took Kate Bush to another planet and NIN to church! youtu.be/Vr4y7ZKfnOk

Although I only know their first three albums, Jason’s voice was always such a unique presence on alt-rock radio. (To me, “My My” still sounds best through car speakers! 😂) Glad to know he’s still got it. Sounds like such a fun (and sweaty) night all around!

Monday is no match for the unrelenting awesomeness of “Driver 8,” “Feeling Gravitys Pull,” “Auctioneer,” “Can’t Get There from Here,” “Wendell Gee,” and pretty much every other note and breath on this beauty. Gorgeous wonderland to swim in before the coffee hits.

This brand new Cranberries live album from their debut album era is such a stellar performance! Dolores sounds magical, the band is on fire, and there’s even a few hints of what their sophomore album was going to sound like (including an early “Zombie”). The “molten lava” vinyl looks swank as well!

Per usual, @harvilla.bsky.social’s newest 60 Songs ep on Sade’s “By Your Side” is a super enjoyable listen. HOWEVER as an ‘80s-‘90s Atlanta kid, it was utter emotional whiplash to hear him casually mention Dale Murphy and Kent Hrbek in the same sentence! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/6...

Man, my dad used to eat this combo all the time (buttermilk variant) but would also add chopped-up raw vidalia onions in it. It was like some sort of milkshake/ice cream abomination that NO ONE joined him in enjoying 😂

As I will be unashamedly diving headfirst into autumn next week (Happy Fallmost to all who celebrate my made-up holiday on 9/1), gonna give a kiss-off spin to one of my favorite seasonal support records that always helps me navigate/survive summer’s humid curse. It’s (almost) fall, y’all!

Oh man, thinking about a Live MTV Unplugged set that might also include acoustic takes on “Freaks” and “Lakini’s Juice” would’ve been amazing! I think their Unplugged had some of the best sounding drums and bass as well. That set was great and too short!

I do not as a rule submit myself to podcasts, but this was a damn fine listen. The first hour is a primer on Soul Asylum's career leading up to their MTV Unplugged appearance, the last 1/2 hour, a fun and informative interview with Dave Pirner. Will is an astute host, constantly contextualizing. A+

I’m really hoping so! Between Hole this year (hopefully), Cranberries last year, and Soul Asylum back in 2023… I’m seriously digging the trend of “never got an album” Unpluggeds finally getting proper releases. C’mon, Fiona Apple, The Cure, and Oasis!

Courtney Love teasing a potential Hole MTV Unplugged album on IG today has got me super stoked! Acoustic Hole was such a treat on its own but the additional trio of cello, harp, and clarinet really took it to a special one-night-only creative space. The slow-spun disco ball was a nice touch too!
