I haven't seen enough to be convinced that AI is a net positive for tech debt (without very close human supervision). I have seen the difficulties of building plans and reviewing output when you don't understand the codebase. I'm always looking for good case studies to change my opinion.

I see no good coming from anthropomorphizing LLM behavior. LLMs do not reason. They do not decide, or collaborate, or attack. They do not make decisions. They do not weigh or evaluate. They are incapable of judgment. They do not think. 1/6

Bureaucracy and control actually get in the way of scaling. Eventually, most of your hires spend most of their time supporting the bureaucracy, not doing actual work. When you eliminate the bureaucracy, you find that the organization doesn't need to be nearly as large as you thought. 2/3

Criminal Deception in Silicon Valley
Interesting paper: Abstract: With entrepreneurial fraud cases on the rise, we investigate how entrepreneurs carry out criminal deception, employing deceptive means to defraud audiences. Analyzing court data from Silicon Valley ventures and their founders prosecuted for fraud between 2000 and 2023, our findings reveal that entrepreneurs carry out criminal deception through a process of façading: Entrepreneurs construct, perform, and protect illusory appearances (façades) that externally project high-growth performance to audiences while masking ventures’ actual underperformance.

So, we, as an industry, need to stop wringing our hands about coding and pivot toward product development as a whole—something we should have been doing all along, but are now forced to do. Of course, that means that people (or neurodiverse teams) will have to actually talk to customers 😄. 6/7

Sure, hand the ai companies another marketing win. It’s not a rogue ai, it’s a lack of willingness or ability to implement a secure sandbox, or even an air gap. It’s laziness but marketing stepped in and rewrote the story.

Should You Use AI for a Task? Here’s a Simple Way to Decide
This essay originally appeared in The Guardian. I teach public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Munk School at the University of Toronto. And it will come as no surprise to you that my students regularly use AI to complete their writing assignments. Doing so is a waste of their tuition money. But if their entire career is going to include AI writing assistants, why shouldn't they embrace their future?

Any company that uses AI-augmented engineering that isn't taking testing 1,000 times more seriously than they used to—which is to say, most of them—is bordering on malfeasance. It's not business as usual plus AI. You need to change the way you do business. 10/10

It takes 30%-50% slack time to ensure a smooth, efficient development flow. Measuring token use leads to undiscovered bugs and security vulnerabilities hiding in the output volume. It also leads to ineffective use of the AI and increased development costs. Measurement is not harmless.

Earlier this month, a German court ruled that Google is liable for its AI search summaries. Rejecting defenses like "users can check for themselves," and that they generally know "that information generated with AI should not be blindly trusted," the court held that the AI's summaries are reflections of the company and "above all an expression of Google's business activities."
