Physicist, rowing coach, webapp developer & occasional writer. Making the switch from 9-to-5 KPI grind to 24/7 passion (+grind) of indie game dev. Riddled with anxiety and indecision, but occasionally does something someone might think is cool. I hope...

On this baking weekend, finally created scenes in #godot for my #indiegame store page capsules. I used the existing CRT shader and assets (the best my artistically challenged self can hope for). I think it turned out... 3.6 roentgen? (not great not terrible). One step closer.. #indiedev #gamedev

It's on days like this I wish I had a laptop battery that lasted for more than thirty seconds. At least I can do my 3 hrs internally debating what game system would be best to build next out in the sunshine, before going back to tweaking the UI for the one hundredth time. #gamedev #indiegame #godot

Since then, I've expanded out the range of tools and given them a little more life - they'll occasionally stop, walk to a new location, start mining again etc. I don't have any gifs of that, but I do have an image of the number of asteroid chunks being spawned basically become a road into space

Since then, I've moved the progress bars, wrapped them in a little UI (from @kenney.nl's scifi UI packs) and tried to make the connection between Matches and progress bars (energy) clearer. Added some little engines to the space ship, from @craftpix.bsky.social's Space Shooter Game Kit.

In the interests of all gamers, past, present and future, who may one day need to upgrade their storage, memory, graphics etc., I'd appreciate it if LLM's/GenAI could just get in the dustbin now. Seriously, when are the shortages and price hikes going to end?!? #gaming #prices #hardware #fluffai
A picture of a 1TB Samsung SSD in an online store. A text alert indicates the price has increased by £101.46, more than doubling the original price

Playing around with CRT Shaders in #godot for my clicker/idle #indiegame about managing a mining operation. I had this vision of a purchasing UI on the LHS with a cheap CRT monitor on the RHS that *simulates* the state of your operation. Still need to tweak properties in the shader but its a start!

Which leads back to where I started this week. My game is mostly the default grey #Godot panels. If I want to stick to my goal of releasing a demo for SteamNextFest in the summer, I need something visually better, even as a placeholder! So here's to actually making a better UI... next week...

And then after some more inspiration from @qaqelol.bsky.social (and I promise I won't just keep tagging you forever haha) and further experimentation with custom effects in tweens, I'm able to inject something, unsettling, into the loading screen. #cyberhorror medium.com/@willdwebste...

Then, a chance reddit post took me down an inspiring rabbit hole of text tweening which lead me to create a loading screen with deciphering text. medium.com/@willdwebste... #godot #gamedev

Finally, some further experimentation with custom method allowed me to inject the interference text into the middle of the tweening. A more subtle effect of something else probing the system!

Next, I played around with another code snippet @qaqelol.bsky.social provided in yesterdays thread. That gives a really nice sweeping effect for the text tweening, visually distinctive from what we've had previously. I can use this with NPC conversations with the player.

Putting in a monospace font, I found a few errors in my logic that meant it visually misbehaved. Resolving those and we have a much more uniform appearence of the text

I'm building a bit of a, I guess, "cyber horror" game, where some external entity starts interferring with the game. So I added an intermediary step to the interpolation, that the system quickly tries to recover from
