Page 203 of Green Party's 2026 conference agenda describes the "forces aligned against our vision": "a global network" of collaborators in politics, business and the media, working on a "multi-decade strategy" to re-run the fascism of the 20th century.

“Hope again” can be read as an imperative – quick, muster some more hope! – but it does also have the unfortunate ring of a party sighing to itself: “Hope, again?” @willdunn.bsky.social's sketch:

Great sketch from @willdunn.bsky.social as always, but I particularly enjoyed the observation that Healey looks like a butcher. He really, really does!

Kemi Badenoch's claim here is bullshit. Either she doesn't understand the figure she's using, or she knows it's wrong, and is citing it anyway. Neither option looks great. Here's more detail on the claim: www.newstatesman.com/business/eco...

Kemi Badenoch claimed at PMQs that a billionaire's departure meant that "every year, £330 million" in taxes would be lost. How does she know that? She doesn't: it was a claim made up from reading a couple of headlines and misinterpreting them. In more detail: www.newstatesman.com/business/eco...

My family's claim to fame is that my uncle, who was a painter, did artwork for Iron Maiden. (Mostly stage sets I think; he also did sets for the Chippendales, and was told off for dancing along to their music during rehearsals.) Anyway, I think he would have liked this cover.
The cover of this week's New Statesman, showing a futuristic skull, looks a bit like a 1980s metal album cover.

Are the doom-laden prophecies of AI experts sincere? Or are they a helpful distraction from the bad things AI companies are doing now? If AI companies believe in this risk, why can't they stop? Thank you to the 20+ people who helped me explore these questions for this week's New Statesman

Lobbyists for the water industry have just announced a new 'National Watershit Prize', which will award a whopping £15,000 to the best research into stopping sewage pollution. That's enough to pay the salary of Thames Water CEO Chris Weston for almost five days!

Sunak has made £3,535,594.16 so far this parliament from his main job as a public speaker for the Washington Speakers Bureau and the Hoover Institution, and an advisor to Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and Anthropic - he might still be an MP but financially I'd argue he is very much in the US
