me, having now beaten control 2, finally ready to read some of the reviews I understand there were balance issues before launch, but it also sounds like many of the people who complained about the combat woulda complained either way because they chose to play in the most boring way possible

Would definitely need to point out the fact that indies are dying off left and right as well. The whole narrative of "rise of the indies" seems to ignore the fact that indies need to eat while they make the game, and face much higher risk relative to their ability to absorb a failure

When you first Take an enemy, an Invulnerable Taken Snail spawns and pursues you. Each time one of your Taken is defeated, it absorbs its power and grows in size and speed.
The Taken Snail kills you instantly on contact.
Catalyst: Volatile Taken
Your Taken are Volatile, and explode when defeated. When the Taken Snail absorbs them, it leaves a trail of Volatility behind it, spreading Volatile to enemies that touch it.

Perk 1: Thwip
Fires a strand projectile that sticks to targets. If the trigger is held, the projectile is connected to the gun by a rope, and when it is released, the target is pulled into the gun's barrel. This teleports the target to a random location out of bounds of the current load zone.
The next time the weapon is fired, the target is ejected at high speed.
Perk 2: Ope
If the projectile is instead fired at terrain, it opens a temporary OOBhole in it, and pulls the wielder out of bounds through it.
Catalyst: OOBhole
Sticking a large number of projectiles to a single target causes them to collapse into an OOBhole, a temporary hole in the terrain that pulls all nearby entities (including friendlies) out of bounds.

It was abandoned after initial testing found that expanding the brain without also enlarging the skull caused... leakage.
Rahul improved the design, but still warns of its perils for Guardians who push past its limits. Their heads, in his words, “popped like grapes”.*

Perk 1: Inflation
Sustained fire with this weapon causes the target’s head to inflate in size.
Friendly targets gain stacks of Ego proportional to their head size, which significantly increases their damage output from all sources.
Perk 2: Burden of thought
If they exceed 10 Ego, they also gain stacks of Migraine: their radar is concealed, their peripheral vision and hearing is gradually obscured, and their damage resistance lowers with each stack.
Enemy targets only suffer the effects of Migraine, with no Ego benefit.
Catalyst: Intracranial Pressure
Enemy targets’ heads now pop like grapes after prolonged fire, jolting nearby enemies.
