Trying out some light hill shading integration with tiles from @mapterhorn.com. Looks pretty good? It's served as a whole separate tile layer so I might not include it RN as I slowly get ready to release a version of this style to the world, but neat to know that this is possible and pretty easy!

New Apple Maps Gaussian splat(?) trees look pretty incredible. Real cool mix of techniques, excited to see it rolled out more broadly.
Screenshot of Apple Maps looking at Church St in San Francisco. The trees have pretty good transparency and look very detailed.Screenshot of Apple Maps looking at Shaw Street in Toronto. The trees are classic photogrammetry leaf polygon blob shapes that warp into the geometry around them and look kinda bad.

I've finally gotten around to natural=wood (tree cover)! Unlike every other OSM renderer that does 3D trees, I've taken the groundbreaking step of not rendering them on top of roads, paths, and rivers! Oh, and also pedestrian paths :)
3D map render of High Park's maple leaf garden in Toronto. Naturally wooded area is darker than the rest of the park colour and has trees scattered inside it, but there is a buffer zone around roads, paths, and rivers so they don't intersect in an ugly way!The buffer zone around roads and rivers is clearly seen in this shot as well2D map render of a far zoomed out look at how cities and lakes render now that tree cover is represented. There is lots of large tree cover area visible!

Protomaps is such cool software, even the debug views look nice.

Some more updates! Military bases, hedges, beaches, and streetcar tracks! Still avoiding dealing with pedestrian paths, but the time is approaching... Also a rare look at a zoomed out view of somewhere that isn't Toronto! There's def more to do to make higher zoom levels look any good.
3D stylized map render of a the HMCS York navy installation by Toronto's waterfront. A red hatch pattern overlays all ground elements within the base to let people know the area is off limits.

The Lakeshore Blvd streetcar tracks can be seen in the background.3D stylized map render of the William Meany Maze on the Toronto Island alongside Manitou Beach.2D stylized map render of CFB Petawawa with the same hatched pattern still visible. When zoomed this far out, rivers are still visible but large bodies of water don't render properly. The map looks a bit sparse with no trees or other ground cover visible.

Haven't had much time to spend on the map style this weekend, but managed to get some basic railway rendering and fancy glass roofs in! I don't want to go *too* hard on rendering all the building surfacing tags, but these feel like a reasonable detail!

Lowering the FOV to 10° makes a surprising amount of difference! Looks much better from higher top-down zoom levels and at closer angled views it makes the map look a lot cozier and more like the little model they have at city hall.
A 3D stylized map view centred on OCAD and the AGO. Toronto's City Hall is visible in the top right.A top down view of the City of Toronto with the waterfront at the bottom and Queens Park at the top. This is the highest one can zoom out before building and road detail starts to be abstracted away by the renderer

One bit of first time UX that I'll also note: The plugin seems to ship with "1More SonoFlow" enabled by default. When users hit the dropdown, because of the filtering logic they are presented with no other options, and it took me a second to figure out that I needed to delete the name.

Maybe the best part of switching away from Apple Music was that (because I'm this shape of nerd) there's a whole world of open-linked data (Musicbrainz) to contribute details to which makes their way back into my library!

Navidrome continues to be such a kick-ass music library. I moved over to it once I got a NAS because Apple has been letting their Music app languish and I haven't regretted it for a minute. Some of my albums aren't on streaming services! There's actually quite a bit out there that isn't.
Full page screenshot of some of my album covers in my Navidrome library. There's 72 of them visible out of a total 181.

Looks pretty good when finished! Some pipes still need to be tuned and all need to be glued, but is otherwise in good shape. It will be a small project to get finished to whomever adopts it (I’ll help you!) but IMO worth it. This thing is cool!

I originally made this in high school, it’s pretty neat but never got completely finished. My parents have graciously been storing my side project shame for YEARS but sadly this doesn’t fit into my apartment and they are renovating so it’s gotta go!

Wow it even technically supports the extremely cursed combo of ordered AND unordered lists! Editor could be better though, it's a few extra steps to switch between sub-item list styles on a per-line basis.
A list of items and sub-items, the items are numbered 1-2 whereas the sub-items are only bullet points.

This nonsense slop diagram in Microsoft's GitHub training guide is embarrassing. Maybe review things before unquestioningly publishing generated garbage? I guess that's too much to ask of one of the largest and richest companies in the world.
A completely nonsensical AI generated diagram from Microsoft presumably created with the intention of showcasing how Git branches work. The Y axis of the graph is labeled "Tim". A callout mentions that "bugfixes may be continvoucly morged". Many arrows are scattered between points on the graph yet no ideas seem to be easily conveyed.

A complete failure of information design.

Personal ICS feed sounds pretty cool... but I'm at a loss as to how to get it from the profile page? Feed aside, I find it useful to be able to add single events to another calendar. Luma's "Add to Calendar" dialogue is pretty decent.

Users can see a list of recent activity and events, there's a settings button, and an option to import records.Luma's Add to Calendar dialogue explaining that an email was sent that should have added an event to your calendar while also offering the user the option to add the event to Google Calendar, Yahoo, Outlook, or iCal.

For reference, it should look something like this:
A square with red and green sides, the middle line between the sides is blurred respects the brightness of both sides and accurately transitions between them instead of getting darker
000
Henry Wilkinson @wilkinson.graphics · 14/04/2025
I thought it would be easy to improve the blur so that it linearizes the image before blurring and re-applies the gamma curve after — apparently this is a completely unsolved problem in the web ecosystem and I can't find any JS packages that handle blur properly??? :(
An image with green and red sides, blurred with a gross dark line in the middle that shouldn't be darker than either side but somehow is due to improper colour math.
