Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 24/04/2026Another #Gannet image from last weekend. This one definitely falls into the wildlife portraiture category (the full-size version of this is 6000 px wide with fantastic detail). That killer's eye, that finely-chiselled bill and that streamlined fuselage....yep, I quite like Gannets! 131 3
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 22/04/2026This image from last weekend has a sense of power and control to it, as the Gannet comes in to land. That's where the streamlined elegance usually ends, as they clatter onto the cliff face (or another Gannet) and waddle around. In the air, by contrast, they move effortlessly and gracefully. #rspb 010 1
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 22/04/2026I'm not alone is being a devotee of the Northern Gannet. It pulls me back to Bempton Cliffs, including running workshops for people who end up with the same regard for Gannets. After all, there aren't many large and elegant pelagic birds that you can view from as a little as 5-10m in the UK! 141 4
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 20/04/2026It's World Curlew Day tomorrow, so here are a few images of these fab birds from last week, taken on the moors above Swaledale. @curlewaction.bsky.social 010 1
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 13/04/2026Choices, choices...! Same Gannet from last month, 3 poses. A nicely-detailed classic avian image, an action-orientated gape shot and an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The wildlife photographer in me says 1 or 2, the artist in me says 3. Any preference? #gannets @rspbengland.bsky.social 010 1
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 10/04/2026A few images from an early morning foray up onto Grinton Moor yesterday. Unfortunately, the numbers of ground-nesting birds on the tops in this area seem to have declined in recent years. I'm only seeing a few curlew and lapwing over 2-3 hour walks these days. #yorkshiredales @yorkshiredales.org.uk 030 3
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 07/04/2026I've just been processing a bunch of images from 2 visits to Bempton Cliffs in the past few weeks (recc'ing for this year's workshops). This serene image, imaginatively titled 'Out of the Blue', is from a morning of low, grey cloud with low light. Cool blue seemed to fit! @rspbengland.bsky.social 000 0
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 06/04/2026Another image from last week's Black Grouse lek that's taken a bit of processing, but I wanted to share this duel. Appalling light meant iso16000 and the wings are still blurred! @yorkshiredales.org.uk 000 0
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 03/04/2026In addition to some nice behavioural images, I cover lek photography, responsible viewing and other useful advice. Leks are real wildlife spectacles to be enjoyed, but the welfare of fragile populations must come first in my view! #nikonphotography @rspbengland.bsky.social @yorkshiredales.org.uk 000 0
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 03/04/2026I've written a short essay about my local Black Grouse populations here www.andrew-atkins.com/black-grouse... It was motivated by one of my visits to a lek this week and a concurrent and interesting discussion about viewing Black Grouse amongst fellow members of a nature group.andrew-atkins.comBlack Grouse in North Yorkshire - Andrew Atkins PhotographyPhoto essay on North Yorkshire's Black Grouse with special reference to lekking sites, seeing Black Grouse in the upper Dales and how to view a lek responsibly. 100 1

Now that my website platform (Format) supports Bluesky social icons and sharing, I've suddenly rediscovered the app. Apologies, folks, for such a naff reason for drifting away. To make up, here's a couple of images of a Black Grouse lek in North Yorkshire this week. 000 0

Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 19/06/2025Those soft, layered, undulations seem quite rhythmic to me. So far, this is one of my favourite images from last week's unintentionally extended North Uist sessions, as it both abstracts, and suggests, the subject simultaneously (I hope!). #icmphotography #impressionism #nikonz7ii #scottishlandscape 020 2
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 18/06/2025An #icmphotography image I created last week on the Isle of Lewis. This felt like a special time and space - middle of the afternoon with an expansive beach, devoid of people, and approaching dark clouds. Purists might note some intentional compositional tension and resolution! #seascapes 010 1
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 03/06/2025Oh, the Hebrides! One of the best places in the UK to move from 50mph winds and lashing rain to a light breeze and watery sunshine in 5 minutes.... and back again just as quickly. A bit of long exposure #ICMPhotography from one of yesterday's respites on Great Bernera. #elementsmagazine #greatberner 020 2
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 23/05/2025A little series of #Puffin images taken at the weekend on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast in the UK. It's a much bigger colony now than I remember from a decade ago, making it a great place to experience these busy birds during the breeding season. #naturephotography #birds #birdphoto 051 5
Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 12/05/20252025 seems to be dominated by preening types that deceive vulnerable and less powerful individuals. I'm talking about the Cuckoo😊. I saw 4 separate Cuckoos over the moors in 30 minutes on Saturday morning - a first - including these 2 that seem to court AND fight! #cuckoos @yorkshiredales.org.uk 000 0

Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 08/05/2025I've just launched a new full-day photography workshop in the upper dales for bird photographers. Andy Atkins @wildyorkshirephoto.co.uk · 16/04/2025Here's another image of the lekking Black Grouse from a couple of days ago. I was pretty happy with this action shot, as it was 6.15am and pretty murky, with ISO6400 needed for a vaguely acceptable shutter speed! As ever, a distance shot from the car. @yorkshiredales.org.uk #wharfedale #birdphoto 020 2
