This new habitat will be a huge boon to juvenile fish, freshwater invertebrates, and many other species. What's more, the volunteers can use their new skills to enhance other local rivers.

All hands on deck for Swindale Beck! 🪏💧 These brilliant volunteers recently joined us for a day of practical learning in the lovely Lake District. Using woody material, the group created some fantastic wildlife habitat.

Our Deputy Director, Dr Tim Jacklin, was honoured to speak at this year's @ifmfish.bsky.social Annual Conference 🐟 The theme was 'Connected Waters', so Tim discussed his work to improve fish passage on the River Ecclesbourne in Derbyshire. Thank you to IFM for another brilliant event!

These new additions will add diversity and complexity to the Mimram's wildlife habitat, while maintaining access for fishing. Huge thanks to the Panshanger Anglers, and to Tarmac, for being so committed to seeing the river thrive!

For years, the club have been improving the river in partnership with Rob and the park's owner, Tarmac. This time, the club placed large fallen trees into the channel, pinned smaller pieces of wood in the margins, and hinge cut young willows so they could be laid down while continuing to grow.

Wonderful work by the Panshanger Anglers! 🐟 🌳 The club recently joined our Conservation Officer Rob Mungovan for a habitat creation day on the River Mimram. This Hertfordshire chalk stream, which flows through Panshanger Park, has a healthy wild brown trout population.

Being a citizen scientist this month means potentially skipping a survey🐟 Some Riverfly groups take a pause now but if you are still out sampling, watch your step. It's spawning season. 📢 Spotted a Redd? Don't step in! Take a 📷 & alert your coordinator immediately. 📷 @wildtrouttrust.bsky.social

Working with the Environment Agency and JBA Consulting, Tim has reduced the weir to a concrete slab where new monitoring equipment has been affixed. With the obstacle gone, fish can move freely, sediment can be dispersed, and water can reshape the riverbed into a mosaic of riffles and gravel bars 🐟

Previously used by the Environment Agency for flood warnings and abstraction regulation, the weir had been made obsolete by technological advances. Crucial data could still be collected at the site, without impounding the river. For our Conservation Officer Tim Jacklin, this was very exciting news.

Dykes Weir, near Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire, was 7 metres long and 0.5 metres high. It created a still, deep pool where sediment accumulated, smothering the riverbed and decreasing the channel’s habitat diversity. Below the weir, a steep drop made it difficult for fish to swim upstream.

Through his surveys, Ed found that these tributaries provide crucial nursery habitat for brown trout and Atlantic salmon. He'll be advising the club on enhancing this habitat, to support their wider conservation work in the Afan catchment.

We headed west last month, for a visit to Afan Valley Angling & Conservation Club 🐟 Our Conservation Officer Ed Noyes was excited to survey the Corrwg and Gwynfi - two tributaries of a mighty Welsh waterway, the River Afan.

This incredible work allowed Friends of Tawd Valley to achieve Trout in the Town’s Bronze Level in 2021, Silver Level in 2022, and finally Gold Level this summer. Thanks in large part to their efforts, the Tawd now has a self-sustaining population of wild brown trout; an amazing achievement 🧵5/6

The group have also set an inspiring example for others, by running events and volunteering days for the local community. All ages have been included, with primary school children having the chance to learn about rivers by raising mayfly nymphs and young brown trout in their classrooms 🧵4/6

Since then, the group have done a huge amount of good for the Tawd. They’ve created wetlands, repaired riverbanks, monitored riverflies, cleared litter, and tackled non-native invasive species. They’ve mapped the river’s tributaries and helped to remove a weir that was blocking fish passage 🧵3/6

After joining the group’s committee, Mike had a mission in mind. When documenting the fish deaths, he had encountered something unexpected: a brown trout. This led to advice from our Conservation Officer Paul Gaskell, and then participation in our urban river project – Trout in the Town 🧵2/6

In early 2021, Mike Flaherty heard some awful news. Three pollution incidents had hit Lancashire’s River Tawd in one week, causing numerous fish deaths. Being passionate about wildlife and his local area, Mike decided to join a nature-focused community group called Friends of Tawd Valley 🧵1/6

After reprofiling the riverbanks to a slope, we added woody structures to diversify the channel and provide habitat for fish, insects, and other wildlife. The improved flow has helped to clear excess sediment from the riverbed, and native plants like water crowfoot have recolonised the channel.

Near the river's source, at the Hinton Ampner estate, part of the Itchen was suffering from the effects of historic modification. Dredging and widening had left the river with unnaturally steep banks and a lack of wildlife habitat.

Hampshire's River Itchen is a chalk stream – a biodiverse and globally rare ecosystem. When in good health, it can support an incredible variety of species, from brown trout and mayflies to kingfishers and water voles.

Our Director, Shaun Leonard, is pleased to share this news: "I'm delighted that Charlie has agreed to join us as a Trustee. He has been a member, and a keen advocate, for many years. It's great news for us that he will be bringing that culture, and his business expertise, to our charity's board."

Charlie has significant experience in advising organisations that are focused on nature, developing animal welfare policies, and rural conservation. He is a former local authority councillor and grew up on the banks of the River Itchen, which led to his involvement with us over the last two decades.

Mark will be remembered not only as an amazing father to his three sons, but also as a father figure to the many who met him on rivers, loughs, and lakes around the world. Our heartfelt thanks to Mark’s family and friends, for supporting us in memory of a truly remarkable man.

This passion for fishing was matched by an abiding concern for the rivers and lakes that many fish call home. Mark’s patience and enthusiasm made him a natural teacher, and children across Northern Ireland are still learning about rivers through 'Salmon in the Classroom' projects that he initiated.

Mark had an enduring love of the great outdoors, and a lifelong passion for fishing. He was an especially skilful salmon and trout fisherman, and he became an Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructor. This enabled him to mentor hundreds of fellow fishermen, and he loved sharing his knowledge.

This summer, we received a hugely thoughtful gift of £875 in memory of Gerald Mark Patterson. Mark sadly passed away this April, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. As we use this generous donation to create a brighter future for rivers, we want to celebrate Mark’s life and legacy.

This was all made possible by the landowner, Jeffrey Pearman. As an arable farmer, he has a close connection to the 560 acres that have been in his family’s care for decades. His enthusiasm allowed us to broaden the project’s scope by creating a new section of meandering river channel.

Together, these techniques will reduce excess sediment, improve the water’s flow, and boost floodplain connectivity. The result is a more natural, diverse, and dynamic river that supports a huge variety of wildlife, including beloved native species like brown trout and water voles.
