When I filled out my 70 question form - repetitive, badly designed, badly laid out - my first comment in the free text box was “I’m pretty sure I have ADHD because this form was absolute torture to me and took me 4 goes to get through.”

Never saw Reginald Perrin but “It ain’t ‘Alf hot mum” was on regularly. But then I think the 70s were much more casually racist than later eras.

Also - to be mid-Atlantic wouldn’t we need the Atlantic on both sides of us? We’re Atlantic Adjacent at best.

Are you young enough that your TV experience wasn’t overwhelmingly repeats? (I know I am leaning into the age gap here. ) I don’t think I would have watched any of Rising Damp on first release. I was 7 or 8 when it stopped. But I’m pretty sure I saw most of the episodes eventually.

I’d agree. The books I mentioned were the only ones of his I’d read. I wasn’t meaning that none of his other books were.

I went on to do a librarianship degree - this was one of the stories I told at my university interview. :-)

The following week she upped the number of books I could take out to 12. :-)

Me too. :-) Though my best was one summer when we had a mobile library visit the estate once a week. I was there waiting for it to pull up and took my allowed 4 books home as quickly as I could. I arrived back about 5 minutes before closing and returned them - all read. Then took out another 4.

Currently at 60+ posts from Rob. Which to me says this should have been a blog post. It’s just ridiculous (and the series is excellent). It’s this and the pernicious rise of WhatsApp groups that have made me realise I’m getting old.

That link is to a pretty version - there are better (and wordier) ones out there but the illustrations really sell the concepts.

I ran a brief UA game in the 00’s based on a similar concept called “Mind The Gap” with a character sheet design based on the tube map.
An Unknown Armies TREPG character sheet designed using elements from the iconic London Underground map. Original concept for the LU map Harry Beck.

The Rest Is Entertainment did an interesting segment about a year ago where they looked at how much you could get paid as an influencer / content creator if you moved to Dubai and started putting out puff pieces saying how great it was. I mean - at that point you’re a civil servant in the PR dept.

It’s all relative - I can’t imagine being in the position of mislaying a cheque of that size.

But “moving slowly while some unspeakable thing chases me” is my exact experience of Mario Kart. The unspeakable thing being my 10yo, who breaks his vow of silence to just mutter ‘noon’ as he laps me twice each race.

That’s about as far as Norfolk to Heligoland. Which to be fair we did hold until 1890 when we gave them over to Germany.

I’m not John (well, I am, but not the John you were talking to) but I would. Jurassic Park is definitely SF, as is The Andromeda Strain, and Terminal Man.

OTOH according to pTerry’s biography, at one point he mislaid a royalty cheque for most of a million quid and didn’t notice for a while. So the lad wasn’t doing too badly, I would surmise. :-)

Yes. That doesn’t change the time or ease of cracking the phone. It just puts pressure on the individual to give up access. And one of the key reasons for that legislation is the ever increasing difficulty of getting into modern phones without the passcode.

It’s nowhere as easy as that. This is a US site so the law they quote is specific to there but the tech is pretty much spot on. observed.org/can-police-g... - if you have a long alphanumeric passcode, up to date software and have turned off biometrics, it’s not at all easy to get in.

In (most of?) the US you cannot be required to give up your PIN so hacking in is the only real option. In the UK you can be required to provide it with a prison sentence if you refuse. But at the core yes. Phones are increasingly difficult to hack into without significant resource.

I can think of a dozen or so reasons why your statement might not be true. And I’m not a high powered lawyer specifically hired to get you off the negligence charge. Double the complexity if you are in a different legislation from where the illegal thing happens. Google “corporate manslaughter”.

The problem is the legal system doesn’t exist which can hold the software responsible. Start dragging CEOs into the dock for dereliction of duty and that changes. E.g. the US Responsible Corporate Officer doctrine: “The Act imposes upon persons exercising authority and…

Out of interest (if you remember!) it says “hallowed be they name” in the 1611 version l, rather than “thy name”. Is that a typo, or was there a different pronoun there then? The rest of the prayer uses “thy”.

No. They should follow the same rule set as the PCs though - no NPC only skills. I don’t really play crunchy games any more (though Stranger Things means 10yo wants to play D&D, gawd ‘elp me) but if / when I do, stat blocks are the way forward. And often ‘vibe’ … what does the game need now.
