#TerracottaTuesday 🏺 Brilliant mid C5 BC trozzella w roosters from Egnazia necropolis, a classic Messapian form w Greek influence. Trozzella - 'little wheels' in local dialect - refers to sculpted circles on handles. Messapian people inhabited 'heel' of Italy from C8 BC until Roman conquest.
A terracotta ceramic vessel with a full rounded body, then angling into a smaller neck. Handles are created using a) two straight near vertical segments of terracotta between 2 round wheels attached where the vessel begins to narrow towards the neck, and then, b) at the top of each of these, using another pair of wheels to mark the join where remaining straight segments are connected, then connecting at an angle back to the top of the neck.
Decoration is in dark red and orangey red, with dots and lines in geometric patterns, and two roosters facing each other in the centre of the bulbous body. The vessel has a slightly protruding rim and a tubular base. Use of animals was fairly rare, introduced c. C5 BC with Greek influence.

Celtic Three-Headed Deity carved limestone, traces of polychromy c. 200 CE Gallo-Roman culture France #handmade #carved #limestone #relief #pigments #polychromy #GalloRoman #culture #Celtic #threeheaded #deity #trifrons #Lugus #god #allseeing #trinity #ancientart #art #France #Reims #cityofkings
Rare limestone bust depicting a Celtic three-headed (trifrons) deity. The bearded face with narrow, straight mouths, long nose and four bulging, almond-shaped eyes. The central face shares each eye with the neighbouring faces. The beard is drilled to depict curls. The back is rough which suggests that the bust was part of a very sculptural relief. Three-headed deities as the present one were found especially in Gaul. See for reference the column and the trifrons Faubourg de Laon in the museum of Reims. The busts most probably represents the Celtic god Lugus. The Celts’ tendency to imagine gods in triads could explain the trifrons. It also stands for the Celts as a symbolic expression of an all-overlooking deity. In any case busts like this are the predecessor of the Christian Holy Trinity. With some color remains. Possibly from the region of Reims.

Before 1777, Falerio Picenus was a nearly perfectly-preserved #Roman town. Then Pius VI’s diggers arrived. For #MosaicMonday, we examine this Antonine-era leopard #emblema, stripped from a private #domus and treated as #spolia in the Vatican's Scala Simonetti. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ROMAN MOSAIC EMBLEMA OF A LEOPARD FROM FALERIO PICENUS, MID-LATE C2 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

A Roman mosaic panel featuring a leopard walking left, depicted with brown and ochre tesserae, framed by a guilloche border. Falerio Picenus was a pristine Roman town until 1777, when Pope Pius VI's excavators arrived to furnish the Museo Pio-Clementino. Stripped from a private domus and cemented into the Scala Simonetti as spolia, this emblema invites reflection. Devoid of Dionysian symbols, the leopard is pure physical threat. Yet, frozen in mosaic, it is utterly tamed. For the Roman diners reclining above it, this apex predator was a conversational set-piece about empire, bringing the wild safely into the domestic sphere. Ultimately, the true predator was not the leopard, but the papal excavators. The homeowners were safe from the beast beneath their feet, but Falerio Picenus had no protection from the C18 diggers who tore the town apart to feed the Vatican collections.

Japan | takaphilography
Captured by landscape photographer Takaphilography, this atmospheric autumnal vista depicts a traditional wooden suspension bridge (tsuribashi) spanning a deep mountain valley shrouded in peak red foliage. At the center of the wooden bridge floor, a single traditional paper umbrella (wagasa) rests gracefully, displaying a bold concentric pattern of crimson-red, white, and sage-green. Framed by an overarching canopy of brilliant Japanese maples (momiji), the bridge’s weathered timber planks and rope handrails draw the eye upward into the misty, shadowed depth of the mountain forest. The soft, diffused light of the overcast canopy creates a dramatic visual contrast, setting the radiant red umbrella and fiery leaves into glowing relief against dark, damp timber and mossy shadows.
