How can you ever hope to make the world better if you can’t even manage to feel pain and sadness for the broken and hurting people in it

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.

What helps a book release? Pre-orders. These two anthologies arrive September 29th, but pre-ordering now helps everyone involved (and might secure future books). SOMETHING FOLLOWED US HOME, edited by @cynthiapelayo.bsky.social, and SILENT NIGHTMARES, co-edited by @chuckpalahniuk.bsky.social and me.

Simon & Schuster officially announced today, so here we go! Silent Nightmares: Haunting Stories to Be Told on the Longest Night of the Year, co-edited by Chuck Palahniuk and Michael Bailey, is now available for pre-order everywhere books are sold. A chilling anthology of tales centered around the longest nights of the year, paying homage to the time-honored Victorian tradition of ghost stories.

@somers.bsky.social your story Pleasantries was fantastic, wow, thanks! I’m sharing it with everyone I know, except my married friends, because I don’t want them to only read the first paragraph and think I’m inquiring, so for them, I’m casually suggesting they read Granta, and hoping they find it

In The Desert, “Deafening Silence” Is No Longer a Clichéd Oxymoron But Instead An Apt Expression Of The Oppressive Quiet That Surrounds Your Quaint, Inconsequential, Existentially Incurious Self
We took our kids to the desert last night, and perhaps it was the reprieve from their game of shout-tag, when they trekked a few dunes over to examine a beach towel buried in the sand that from a dist...

“In Revival, too, King is punishing himself in public, writing out his worst nightmare. As he ages, he’s seems to have decided that the most horrifying thing of all isn’t a demonic car, a killer clown, or even a super-plague. It’s the simple, stark reality that none of us gets out of here alive…

The internet is so broken example #326: I queried good farewell party ideas and the top results suggested an art class or brewery tour or dance class or responses better suited to “activities to do with coworkers that don’t involve chatting at happy hour” and not at all suitable for a farewell.

How do you stay awake when you’re on duty? I’m thinking coffee. Cola. Opening a window or turning down the thermostat and not wearing a jacket. Pacing. What else? (Yes. This is for a story.)

Listening to my daughter sing at her third grade choir showcase and I can’t help but hope that when Beyoncé was a 3rd grader, she couldn’t be bothered to sing the notes the other kids sang either. Some kids sing the hits, while others make the hits. Right?

I remember when I was the only one I knew using foursquare, but it was because this Indian/Mexican fusion place that made naan burritos filled with chipotle paneer offered a buy one get one deal when you checked in to the app, and then one day, the shop said no more! So, I quit using that app.
