This is to announce that four months after the initial order, and after three cancellations by international intermediaries, my local bookstore has received an in-print copy of a book by William Gass I have asked for. Such is the state of global retail for the one product that started it.

The age of financialisation has taught us that keeping as many options as possible as long as possible was sound decision-making. Don't over-commit, sell unproductive risk to the greater fool, be the first to jump ship.

@nixonsimon.bsky.social 's advice for Burnham has significance beyond the UK: With the advent of ubiquitous AI, the neo-liberal idea of "efficiency" has become a moot political point. The State must (create incentives to) invest in resilience to sustain its viability.

By far the funniest moment in Homer’s Odyssey is when Circe says, “Shall we have sex?” and Odysseus says, “You just turned all my men into pigs. You have the GALL to think I would sleep with you? Of course I will. Absolutely. But don’t do any weird spells”
photograph of the relevant passage in Fitzgerald's translation of the Odyssey ("I make no bed of love with you upon it. Or swear me first a great oath, if I do, you'll work no more enchantment to my harm.")

This piece might overstate the humanities and political perspectives while overlooking the economic ramifications. We are entering a world in which commercial writing/reading might lose its significance, not at least because a growing portion of is written and read by machines.

It took me a while to finish, but it Magnifica Humanitas is a worthwhile slow read. It might be a bit unspecific on action and (purposefully?) ignores how interacting with chatbots is replacing meditation and prayer, but it is a thorough political analysis and a forceful assertion of human agency.

I disagree. Its obvious we need to re-arm, and fast, and continue to improve our decision-making. What makes Europe strong and attractive though is that we have, post WWII, mostly avoided the temptation to have our affairs taken care of by strongmen. That's exactly what triggers the autocrats.
