I know, right? I can see that you're a man of taste and refinement like myself. Here, suck the nostalgia out of this image:

Every time I hear the title "Master and Commander" it sounds to me like a halfway-decent naval warfare game for the Mac post-The Ancient Art Of War At Sea-- say, '89 or so. #Mac #VideoGames

Box, disc, and promo material for THE ANCIENT ART OF WAR AT SEA, which I played the heck out of back in the day.

HUNGRY GHOSTS: THREE ONI OF BLOOD, on the other hand, is somewhat different. It's kind of a #YA #YoungAdult #novel about a young man who's a child #soldier in Japan's civil wars and their aftermath. He's bitter and worn out (and cursed by #oni). This novel is about him #coping with his burdens.

More than four centuries ago, Japan lies ravaged by famine and civil war. Takeshi is a young warrior who is under a curse. After an ambush by enemy soldiers, he is left temporarily blinded, but is rescued by a monk. Takeshi thinks that surely no one can help him with the curse—until he finds out that his new monk friend used to be the legendary samurai Taketsura, wielder of the sword Lightning-on-the-Water. Together with the orphan girl Kiyoko (a formidable young swordswoman in her own right), can these three keep each other alive during the supernatural threats of Japan’s era of civil war?

HUNGRY GHOSTS revisits the work of Lafcadio Hearn, a Victorian-era European writer who, in his book KWAIDAN: STORIES AND STUDIES OF STRANGE THINGS (the most famous of his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories), told a story of Isogai Heidazaemon Taketsura, a samurai who renounced his old life and became a wandering priest when Japan lay ravaged by famine and civil war.
This novel brings to life a different imagining of Taketsura’s wanderings, giving him two teenagers to accompany him, a young orphan girl whose grandfather taught her the blade, and a young soldier under an oni’s curse that threatens to turn him into a monster. In the midst of post-war famine and dangers, the three must face death, (other) monsters, and of course ghosts – some of which are their own.

I recently made this video about the STTS series. It's about #trauma and how #childhood is often the absolute WORST and about how many people stay immature FOREVER but some are wise even when they're kids-- and how hard that is (at all ages honestly). But it also is a series that offers #hope.

Sure it's TRUE, but it's the visual that gets me. Visually, this is the atomic briefcase from KISS ME DEADLY... that was also ripped off later... but REPO MAN it was the trunk of the car and PULP FICTION's briefcase glowed but didn't (directly) kill you. So that's fascinating. #NoMoreAI #AISucks

Someone at Futurism is a smarty every day. (A man looks with so much horror he's almost crosseyed at whatever he's seeing on a glowing laptop.)

Today’s Gem: When the Clock Strikes by Tanith Lee

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOHiicwmw8U

Tanith Lee reimagines Cinderella as a dark tale of vengeance. This is a perfect combination of fairy tale tropes, folk horror, and the gothic tradition. Cinderella is no victim here, just an instrument of her mother’s revenge on a system that destroyed an innocent family.
