you may or may not remember this from AW2, but when i logged on to do a playthrough because a couple friends were playing it before control resonant, i immediately realized i had forgotten that the first NG+ run has the "true" ending

feel like we are primed to be force-fed a deep yankee playoff run during which the entire sports media machine insists we treat it exactly like the knicks thing

other than the white sox and padres i kind of hate all these teams so i might just go with this for my rooting interest outside of hoping the white sox and padres play in the world series and manfred loses sleep over the TV ratings for 10 days

whoever's idea it was to just directly rip off the sardaukar throat singing from the villeneuve dune movies and make it the board's voice deserves a huge raise

giving credit where credit is due, as pointed out to me by @cdgoldstein.baseballprospectus.com; i came to this opinion by reading plenty of @marcnormandin.bsky.social's work, i don't mean to pass this off as my own original hypothesis.

OF COURSE the league full of team that all have huge national exposure are worth more than the regional teams. it's not the cap!
040
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
the whole point of this is to say: each NFL team is a national operation. most MLB teams, save the exact two you're thinking of, are regional.

one thing that i really feel like most people don't know is that if you live in a market where a thursday night football game includes the team in your market, that game is also available on network TV. the steelers should be on WPXI this week.
210
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
on any given week there are six at least national TV broadcasts in the NFL and no more than 16 games. most of the NFL is on TV all the time! you can say "some of that is streaming and some of it isn't and " etc. etc. but here's the other thing: five of those six game are available on traditional TV

maybe i'm wrong because i do not have Big Business Brain and all they can think is "the NBA and NFL have caps are more valuable than we are" but those are all different sports than baseball! the seasons are different lengths, which means national vs. local TV works differently!

i just find it really hard to believe someone is paying $4 billion for the padres or the angels if there's more than an even remote chance that the league is about to dump attendance into the shitter for three years and nuke national TV money

MLB functionally turned itself into an entirely new sport to dig out of 1994, first all at once in the late 1990s and then again very slowly from ~2008-present. hockey *lost* their major TV contract as a result of their lockout and it took forever to dig out of that hole.

teams being sold, especially at the prices they go for now, relies entirely on "line go up." you *might* argue that a salary cap will make the teams more valuable, but canceling a full season always brings a huge hit to TV ratings and ticket sales.
130
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
i've said this before but now that the season is over i'll say it again: there will be a lockout, but since teams are still getting sold, i'd be shocked if the owners actually try to cancel a season.

that's the lesson. an off-season spent trying to tell you anything else is an off-season that's setting the team up for more failure.
120
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
but, the pirates were not significantly closer to making the playoffs this year (six games) than they were in 2023 (eight games). the 2023 pirates stunk. you cannot predicate your playoff hopes on other teams being bad enough to let you in.
141
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
ultimately i think what 2026 was for the pirates depends on 2027; if they reel off 95 wins next year, then we think about this year as a stepping stone, in the way that we mostly think back to 2011 and 2012 now. if this is the peak, then it's gonna be a season that makes me mad for a long time.

but they aimed for the last wild card spot, and the last wild card spot played above their ceiling this year. THAT's the mistake they can't repeat this winter: AIMING for an 85-win third wild card. "aim for the moon" etc etc. but it's true.

not for nothing, but i thought it was absurd that travis williams said a year ago that they wanted to make the playoffs in 2026; they were dogshit last year, and they had a long way to go to get that offense into fighting shape. they got closer than i would've guessed on the last day of last year

it doesn't matter how you break out the could'ves and should'ves with the injuries and the bullpens; they landed right where most people would have guessed they would land, and they did it more or less how the projection systems said they would do it (mostly with their offense).

like, before the season started pretty much everyone who was paying attention to them and not being an outright doomer (which, no disrespect to the Pirate Doomers, i get it) thought they were an 80-85 win team, depending on how it broke. and that was correct, that's what they were.
110
working towards a 2034 window of contention @whygavs.com · 28/09/2026
i will probably think on this pirate season some more between now and when the off-season starts, but my main quick thought is this: they said a year ago that they wanted to make the playoffs, but they built a team with about an 85-win ceiling. they didn't shoot high enough.

the entire AL East getting stacked to one side of the bracket to Hunger Games themselves out before the ALCS when they had the three best records in the AL is a little hilarious, though

tough situation for him in his last two months to get traded out to a team you've never played for who then tanks straight out of the playoffs
