this is the full response i got when i asked about this (i'm including mostly it in case other educators find it useful):

Yes — and the short version is that listing presidents is a **purely factual, structured task**, while generating an *image* of them requires a model to combine factual accuracy with **visual generation**, which is much less reliable for historical details.

When I make a text list:

* I can directly pull from reliable structured data (e.g., official records).
* There’s no “creativity” involved — the output is simply the facts in order.

When I make an image grid of presidents:

* The image generation model isn’t a historian — it works by combining patterns it has seen in training images.
* It sometimes *hallucinates* names, dates, or even faces, because it doesn’t “look up” the facts while generating.
* It can mix together similar names, misspell, or invent figures (like “John Mursen” or “George Warighen”) because it doesn’t verify against the real presidential list.
* Historical timeline alignment is especially error-prone when the generator is trying to arrange dozens of people in a grid.

Basically: text = accuracy; images = artistic reconstruction with no fact-checker in the loop.
That’s why an image generator might confidently give you a completely fictional president who “served” before the U.S. existed.
