(This is also true for prosocial positions — for example an op might take an antiracist position that’s great but be so aggro about it people get put off plus another account can nutpick and look reasonable.)

Especially with the ones your’re tangentially in - how sure are you they’re real people? Operatives/bots sometimes perform racism for demoralization ops (as well as grievance recruitment). Real people can get fighty/terrible too, but these days ”how do I know they’re real” is often worth asking.

Was thinking "I might need to create a custom feed that just shows relatively quiet posters" because cool as some people are, favoring sheer volume is a bug, not a feature. And lo: Someone has already done it! bsky.app/profile/why....

Meta glasses ad vandalized in London
Everything about this story is wonderful, from the activist group’s name to the surgical vandalism to the not-so-subtle nod to the classic ”They Live”, John Carpenter’s 1988 film…

Freesound seems OK. YouTube, not IMO. And at some level we collectively decided this was OK when we let Spotify with its pittance payouts and who's-going-to-stop-me approach become a thing. If we want other outcomes, we're going to have to collectively decide this is not OK and remake law.

It doesn't matter if it's wrong if it's the catechism, if it's repeated so early and often that enough people make that belief home and hold it dear as God himself.

Doesn’t really answer the question: who stayed out that was obviously competitive more competitive *circa 2025*? With justifications that aren’t so obviously monday morning quarterbacking? If Mills had never wanted to be there, she could have just stayed out. More likely she read the room.

whyfly @whyfly.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
Who stayed out that would have been more competitive? Blaming Schumer in general is a odd reflex. It's odd to blame *anyone* for preferring someone like Mills who has in fact won statewide office twice and made reasonable policy contributions. That's a decent candidate for a Senate seat.

I spoke to Mitch McConnell for 20 minutes this morning. He said "pity this busy monster, manunkind, not. Progress is a comfortable disease: your victim (death and life safely beyond) plays with the bigness of his littleness."

Janet Mills has won statewide office in Maine twice. She's done good things for healthcare, education, housing, & other things that help people. She's probably the only other candidate who can make the 5 mo runway left in the race (besides the guy who won the primary but might have to drop out).

Stack Overflow is still a great resource for the same reasons it was a great resource to train models on. I'm glad some models will give references to it in their answers; I often learn something from reading those. File this under takes that'll be popular, predictive, and still wrong.

This post is hilarious. And banging on "we lost because corrupt establishment didn't do my things" *is* functioning as cog in that political machinery. The opposition knows this. Do you? Advocate for the things. Work for the party that does them. But it's hard to punish your allies to victory.

Do you consider Switzerland, The Netherlands, Germany, and France industrialized? Because they have insurance companies and universal coverage. There’s an ACA shaped path there with subsidies and some admin changes. Single payer can work great too, but it’s not the only way.

whyfly @whyfly.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
HR 3962 had the public option and was *passed* by the house in 2009. It’s nonsense to say that any dems killed it in the house. Obamacare subsidies *have* been gutted by Republicans, but that’s not the Dems fault.
100
whyfly @whyfly.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Dozens of moderate Dems worked for a public option in the Senate. *1* (Leiberman) killed it because they didn't have more votes. A strong constituency might draw several lessons from that (or the benefits of the ACA) but "moderate dems killed it!" would not be the smartest one.

I was hoping they wouldn't be swear words, but these do seem to be profane times. Best McConnell lessons D minority senate leadership should learn from ? (Not sure lessons transfer to the House/Jeffries but maybe...)

whyfly @whyfly.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
I'm not sure I understand what options legislative minority leadership has beyond negotiation (hell, even legislative *majority* work involves a lot of negotiation), but I'm definitely open to hearing what people think minority leadership should be doing.

The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.

It might be that I just don't know who most of the Democratic associated people are, but if Cory Booker's it or we're squinting to pretend Larry Summers counts, bipartisan might be the wrong term here?
