I think there was a decade between those two things and people were very enthusiastic about the economy immediately prior to COVID, so I don't think it makes sense to ascribe it to both so much as something that happened because of or alongside COVID

Like big accounts almost never accuse me of being wrong about stuff I argue (because I'm usually obviously right). But they'll make tons of jokes about how annoying I am to the people saying I'm wrong, which is how they avoid the cognitive dissonance and all stay friends.

I am obviously biased here but I'm convinced the "so-and-so is annoying" thing is a mechanism people use to acquiesce themselves to the anti-factual mob. When you point out the mob is delusional, a lot of people will not quite say you're wrong and they're right, but they'll say you're ANNOYING

(Although if you go look through my Twitter posts from Trump 1.0 I think you can find me arguing that "everyone is economically miserable forever" doesn't really make sense as a progressive article of faith. But I was complaining about the likes of the American Prospect, not EVERYONE)

What happened is that the gloomy economic rhetoric of the progressive political nerd somehow became accepted as the "correct" viewpoint on the economy around the same time that it became wildly and comically inaccurate

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 9m
While I think there's some truth that a lot of the rhetoric you hear today dates back 10-20 years, what's weird is that 5-6 years ago, it was confined to ideological spaces, while out in the real world, there was a lot of "Well, whatever you think of Trump, his economy is booming"

Can’t help but wonder how many people liking this tweet turn around and talk about affordability as a huge problem in America

“The president cannot bulldoze the White House and ask the world’s richest men to build him a palace on top of the ruins” is not a process question; him doing this is not bad because he didn’t follow the exact process but because it’s the act of a corrupt monarch.

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 1h
The trick is that events of immense importance to the survival of America as a democratic nation of laws are re-characterized as “process issues” about correct adherence to the federal appropriations system.

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 2h
But the unwritten rules of US politics say that you must refer to such matters in the dry vernacular of federal lawmaking and policy, which contains no language for lawless corruption of this magnitude. So the reality of it is disguised from us; everything gets a rhetorical veneer of legitimacy.

He is converting the White House into a palace for himself and Washington DC into a city of self-monuments, using money given to him by oligarchs buying his favor. It’s literally what Putin does: creates oligarchs so they can glorify him with billion-dollar kingly gifts.

Trump may as well start loaning out the US military to the highest bidder. As long as he talks about it at press conferences and doesn’t show any guilt, the media will apparently not be able to detect that it’s extraordinary, scandalous corruption.

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 2h
What’s astounding to me is how “the president builds himself a palace with money given directly to him in secret by the richest people in America,” literally the most straightforward and worst executive-branch corruption story in US history, just gets shrugged at because Trump is unapologetic

All the tens of thousands of people mutually agreeing to lie to each other so they can feel good and validated will simply mutually agree that you’re a pedantic idiot for asking them to stop, and maybe call you a bigot or something for good measure, and nothing will improve. Hard to not stop caring.

It is now broadly accepted among so many people - frankly, so many of YOU - that the way to prove any claim is to get a critical mass of social media likes and shares behind it. If you try to insist that false things not be treated as true, you’ll change little, but you’ll ruin your reputation.

I’ve honestly been wondering where Sky went and this explains it perfectly. If you care about data, if you care about policy - if you care about *reality* - it’s hard to even express how depressing it is to see everyone mutually agree that facts simply don’t matter anymore.

One of the reasons I don’t really like posting about politics anymore and basically just stick to numbers about oil, and even then I’m logging off a lot more, it’s because you get insane bullshit like this You did not have $500k in debt from the birth of your child. You had a paperwork error.
It *is* insane how Americans accept our dogshit healthcare system. Despite having a gold marketplace plan, my Canadian immigrant wife and I had over $500k in debt from our daughter's birth and NICU stay. She spent hours on the phone every week managing bills and payment plans.

went into which billing year. By the time the last bill was paid over 3 years later we were out over $30,000. My wife went back and forth with the hospital and Cigna about the $500k bill until it was written off without any further explanation. It wasn't clear at any time what was in network or out.

Anyone who spends time constructing tortures for inanimate objects is clearly imagining, fantasizing, or wishing they had minds. You wouldn’t regard someone who lights mannequins on fire or rips them apart with barbed wire as a healthy or safe person. We all know this. bsky.app/profile/they...

The sadists may not believe the AIs are conscious but on some level they certainly wish they were; if not, why bother with the sadism? It’s not enjoyable, even as fantasy, without that possibility.

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It doesn’t really matter so much if the AI actually lacks a mind, at least in terms of what it tells you about the person engaging in sadism. They’re absolutely IMAGINING it does, so they can derive pleasure from inflicting pain on it. Otherwise they’re literally just wasting time on nothing.

Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
I almost want to write a longer thing about this but there’s a reason people don’t “torture” tables or staplers. Cruelty is directed towards AIs specifically because people can impute a mind on them, then give themselves a permission slip to engage in sadism.

In my view a big issue with dirtbag leftism has always been that it’s more a social group than an ideology, which makes it easy for terrible ideas to spread, because the end goal is membership and acceptance and those things are conditioned on sharing views with the crowd
71138
Will Stancil @whstancil.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
I actually don’t think most dirtbag leftists ended up espousing anything like this, but I do wonder if how many of them engaged in a self-reflective exercise about how this kind of person could climb to the center of their political clique
