As a patient? No. As a doctor? Also no. As a barista who sells iced coffee to colonoscopy spectators? Yes.

Sure, when they’re little! Just wait ‘til they’re a teenager and get into stuff like David Lynch and Nathan Fielder and they keep insisting you watch Perfect Blue because it’s the best psychological horror movie ever made, animated or not, and… oh actually, this is kinda good too.

Ugh, so many of their arguments are about the book, but the uniforms are based on the movie costumes, which are explicitly fascist. Just fully non-sequitur arguments.

My go to recommendation is James Acaster’s Netflix special, Repertoire. They’re excellent and all four specials tie together into one mega special.

I always imagined there was some kind of “interaction radius”, where things within that radius were fully replicated objects, but things outside that radius are projections. So when people move around, things shift back and forth between real and projections.

Dolly Parton was as close to an American Doctor Who as you can get. ✅ Eccentric outfits ✅ Radical empathy ✅ Iconic music ✅ Combats bigotry ✅ Mysterious/convoluted lore ✅ Time machine (speculation)

In fiction, it’s common to see those who embody the best of humanity. I think of reading Spider-Man as a kid, or later discovering Doctor Who, and I remember being deeply inspired by the power of their empathy. They are not so common in reality. I’d venture to say Dolly Parton was one of them.

Reminder: The act of composing your thoughts so that others can understand them, makes you understand them better, and forces you to examine the way others will hear them. Forfeiting this process to the plagiarism machine makes you understand, and be understood, less.

Second book was another Le Guin, “A Fisherman of the Inland Sea”. Excellent. A collection of vignettes of the future, that are so imaginative and sincere, yet self aware and surprisingly funny.

“You think you are safe. But if someone hates you, they will come up with the reason after the fact. Only then do you realize what you put in power. Only then do you realize what you stripped away. There is terrible power in a joke, in a story, in taking the truth and making it ugly.” (8/9)

“It always begins as a joke. Listen to me, both of you.

One sees a father or a mother of whom they do not approve--

And their brats won’t shut up, and the parents are so exhausted that they just let their children scream, all sticky and crying and hitting and wild.

And you say to your friends, “You should have to pass a test to breed". Do you understand? "You should have to get licensed to have kids.”

A father who erred, because he was raised believing men are pathetic if they are caregivers.

The first tests are drafted.

And you think, “Good." you think, "Those children are safe now”.

The test comes out, and yes, there're some problems, but nothing that cannot be ironed out, yes?

But now, anyone with mental illness, with a criminal record, is barred from becoming a parent. And you think, “Well, that is sensible, yes?”

“Oh no, I must to use AI because I’ve tried literally nothing else.” This is nonsensical. If you’ve prepared a puzzle that requires an image you don’t have, you haven’t prepared a puzzle at all. There are thousands of puzzle ideas out there that require very little effort and cost nothing.

MINOR SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN BND: If I, a non-math genius audience member, can figure out the limitations of the villains power, then Peter Parker, who can engineer DNA altering technology, can do it without using AI.

MINOR SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN BND: I didn’t realize how much I was looking forward to a de-Iron Manned Spidey until I realized he wasn’t. Spider-Man using the governments own mass surveillance tech feels so incongruous with the character.

I must report that the new Spider-Man is very good. Seems like the studio learned that leaning into a strong emotional core is more important than soulless quipping. It is not perfect, however, because the positive depiction of AI mass surveillance in the film is kinda gross.

Will Shania Twain ever change to lyrics to “That Don’t Impress Me Much” so that she names a specific type of car, thereby aligning the verse with the rest of the song?
