Before concluding this thread I want to ask you, what would you like to see on the server? Right now it is just a forum channel where I will post news about reType4, a general channel where you can talk with me or other people and a rules channel.

I promise that I will try to take a look at Twitter (I use Bluesky everyday so this doesn't apply here) once every week to answer any messages but I plan to finally open the Discord server I created in 2023 and make that my main communication channel, at least until I publish the reType4 website.

The free time I have regained allows me to spend my time on more important things like friends and family, and other personal things. If you can, I highly recommend that you try to reduce the time you spend on these apps.

You may have noticed that I have become inactive on Twitter, but last year I decided to remove many apps from my phone including Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok. These apps make use of dark patterns to maximize the time you spend on these apps.

I know this is completely backwards to some people that believe in getting to the end result by any means necessary. But delegating the thought process to a machine, especially on personal projects, is a grave mistake in my opinion because you are preventing yourself from learning.

For my personal projects I value more the process of doing the task itself than the end result, because by doing it you gain invaluable knowledge and skills. The end result is just... the end.

There are very few people in the world that can do those things and I want to become one of them. I love computers, that is what I do for a living, I also really enjoy learning new skills and solving puzzles, it makes me happy knowing that I can make a living doing what I love.

Reverse engineering and documenting an entire game all by yourself is not an easy task and takes a LOT of time. You need to be knowledgeable about many different disciplines like assembly programming, 3D modeling and animation, texturing, audio programming and many MANY more.

Now a couple of personal thoughts: I want to declare that this project doesn't use AI in any way shape or form and never will. My main goal with this project is to learn as much as possible and become a better programmer and professional as a result.

I'm also in the process of hiring an artist to make an official logo and other graphics for reType4. I already have a list of a couple of great artists whose styles match my vision, but if you know someone and you think they would do a good job send me their portfolio (NO AI).

With splat and other new tools at my disposal I will be able to iterate faster and match functions quickly. So expect the number of matched functions to increase soon!

Splat(github.com/ethteck/splat) is a binary splitting tool designed to assist with decompilation projects like mine. When I began working on reType4 in 2021 this program was at its infancy and didn't have support for PSX binaries (and also wasn't on my radar).

Second, as of today the code is 87% documented and 20% matching. My main focus is on documenting the code but recently I have been putting more effort into matching more functions. In fact, during the last few months I have migrated my existing code into a splat-based workflow.

First, I want to announce the official name of the project is "reType4". It's a wordplay with two meanings, the first "reType" as in "retyping / rewriting the original code", the second comes from combining "re" (reverse engineering) and "type4" from R4: Ridge Racer Type 4.

The seventh of August, 2026 marked the fifth anniversary of my R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 reverse engineering efforts (in today's lingo this is what you call a "decomp") and I want to share with you an update on the current state of the project, future plans and a couple of thoughts.

Window's file property dialog showing the folder that contains the projects data, it is called "Ridge Racer Type 4" and is withing another directory called "Reverse Engineering". The the date of creation says "Saturday, August 7, 2021, 18:09:38". This is the date I started working on the project.

I personally use learnnatively.com, it contains a list of japanese resources (books, manga, videos) ranked by level. You can also use it to track your progress or to learn other languages. If you need help or more resources feel free to send me a DM.

jiten.moe, jpdb.io or anki for vocab. For grammar there are many options such as Tae Kim's guide to Japanese, yoku.bi or bunpro.jp, the later has a grammar points section that is really good. IMO the most important part is immersion, for beginners I recommend that you start by reading easy books.

Watching the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, and my favorite reoccurring gag is that every time they introduce someone new, they confess that they've never read the book. Then Giger shows up, the only one who's read the thing, to point out that the movie wasn't a very faithful adaptation.
