Trump World, day 187 (Fri., 7/25, noon EDT):

 - The latest estimate is that the Trump administration has now killed 375,000 people, mostly through the cessation of foreign aid.

 - The U.S. is reportedly holding a record-breaking 56,000 immigrants, more than 70% of whom have no criminal history.

 - Trump just signed an executive order apparently demanding that homeless people be imprisoned.

 - The Texas Tribune reports that the actual cost of building the west Texas concentration camp and necessary infrastructure will be $1.26 billion.

 - In positive news, the Supreme Court, 6-3, voted to protect key beneficial features of the Voting Rights Act, which had been under attack by North Dakota’s attempted redistricting.

 - The Washington Post yesterday carried a report that an average 60-year-old will see their health insurance rates increase by about $8,000 a year under the rules in the big budget bill.

 - The Department of Justice was seen to have given Epstein’s jailed associate a large box of files yesterday. They are meeting with her again today. She has a history of lying, and is expected to do so again in a bid for leniency.

 - A “whites only” organization is expanding into Missouri. It’s the position of the group calling itself “Return to the Land” that, if white people want to live with only white people (and shut out everyone else from their spaces, specifically including Jews), they should be allowed to do that. They are approaching this by recruiting and screening members based on European ancestry, then setting up members-only communities.

 - Tennessee is planning to kill a man via lethal injection, but he has an automatic defibrillator installed in his chest that would continually shock him to keep him alive. A judge has already ordered that the defibrillator must be removed at a hospital prior to the execution, but Tennessee is continuing to fight that ruling.

Trump World, day 186 (Thur., 7/24, 1 PM EDT):

-21 children in Gaza have died of starvation in just three days. Today, Trump pulled the U.S. out of ceasefire talks, claiming that Hamas is not negotiating in good faith.

-The Trump administration is spending $200 million to build its next concentration camp, this one to imprison 5,000 people in west Texas.

-The Deputy U.S. Attorney General is meeting today with the only person (a woman) jailed over the Epstein pedophile ring. It's widely expected that the attorney will offer her clemency in exchange for her lying about what she knows.

- Epstein's former attorney conveniently died on Monday.

- The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump in May that he appeared repeatedly in the Epstein files, along with many other high-profile men. This timing corresponds with Musk posting that Trump was in the Epstein files; Musk had heard. While this should surprise no one Trump and Epstein were friends, at a minimum — Trump himself just lied when asked whether Bondi had told him. Congressional Democrats are attempting to get Bondi to testify about all this.

- A judge has denied the administration's request to release Epstein grand jury testimony, which in any event would be unlikely to implicate Trump or most of the other wealthy pedophiles, since they were not central to that case.

- Trump's latest attempt to divert from Epstein news is to claim that Obama twisted the facts of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election, in a way intended to hurt Trump. The Director of National Intelligence released classified documents she said prove this, but they don't support Trump's claim. She also said that the documents reported Clinton was mentally incompetent, but failed to mention that it was the Russian operatives who made these false statements to bolster Trump. The only significant news source to take this bait was, of course, Fox News.

- Columbia University continues paying for its egregious capitulation to Trump, now agreeing to censure 70 more students and pay $220 million to get $400 million in grant funding restored.

- Congress has deliberately set up the Consumer Product Safety Commission to be non-partisan. The Supreme Court just gave Trump permission to fire anyone he wants from the CPSC.

- Last year, the Federal Trade Commission banned two executives from sitting on the boards of Exxon and Chevron, after it was revealed that they colluded to fix gasoline prices. Trump's FTC just lifted that ban.

- A man was fired this week for spewing far Right nonsense. After he shared his story on social media, others in the far Right have so far donated to him $36,000.

Trump World, day 185 (Wed., 7/23, 1 PM EDT):

- Leaked video from 26 Federal Plaza in New York City shows what appear to be immigrant detainees sleeping directly on tile floors, with only a single thin blanket each to lie on. They are being held in a brightly lit room, with a single toilet in full view.

- A panel of federal judges in New Jersey rejected Trump's pick for top prosecutor in that state. A few hours later, the Department of Justice fired the judges' pick and reinstalled Trump's choice anyway: his former personal attorney.

- The top court of the United Nations just issued a 500-page decision that a "clean, healthy and sustainable environment" is a basic human right. This finding opens the way for polluters and other climate change offenders to be charged in international courts, such as by Pacific island nations that are literally being erased by the rising ocean.

- The Trump administration is releasing an aggressive AI policy, intended to keep the U.S. at the forefront of AI development. While this may sound benign, AI computing centers drain a massive amount of electricity, driving rates up for everyone around them and contributing massively to pollution in areas using fossil fuels for power. This is why the big budget bill tried (but failed) to prevent U.S. states from making AI-related laws to protect themselves.

- Additionally, the policy intends to make AI less "woke," by suppressing its tendency to actually consider entire populations and diverse viewpoints. The Trump administration calls this an "ideological bias" instead of recognizing it as a proper cross-section of humanity. The first attempt to prevent this "bias" is what lead Musk's Grok to start praising Hitler.

- By shooting people waiting for humanitarian aid, Israel appears to be attempting to starve the population of Gaza to death. A six-week old baby there just died from hunger.

- All 252 Venezuelans we deported to CECOT in El Salvador have been shipped to Venezuela. While this is an improvement over daily torture, most of them have still been denied due process by the U.S., and lawyers are still trying to bring some of them back.

- A SkyWest Delta flight nearly struck a B-52 bomber in North Dakota. It appears that overworked air traffic controllers didn't advise the two planes of the impending midair collision.

- Trump's Department of Labor is rescinding sixty regulations that until now protected U.S. workers, particularly women and minorities. The Secretary of Labor says the rules are “obsolete” and “too costly."

- A court ruled that the Trump administration must reinstate a public website listing actual spending on congressionally-approved items. The administration doesn't like this site, because it consistently shows that DOGE is lying about their "savings."

– In a brazen attempt to keep the House from voting to release the Epstein files, the Speaker is preventing votes on everything else today and sending all the Representatives home early for their summer break.

- Trump's most recent attempt at deflection is to release the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination files instead.

- ICE in Miami have forced prisoners, with their hands cuffed behind their backs, to eat food from plates on the floor like animals.

- The Secretary of Defense plans to hold immigrants at military bases in Indiana and New Jersey.

- 25 nations - but not the U.S. — joined together to rebuke Israel for murdering innocents seeking aid in Gaza, and to demand an end to hostilities there.

- Visitors to the U.S. are going to be charged a $250 "visa integrity" fee.

- A judge ordered that Radio Free Europe continue to be funded for at least another two months.

-West Palm Beach is removing its rainbow crosswalks, under pressure from Trump and Florida's governor.

-Trump is grasping at straws to divert attention from Epstein. He posted an AI video of Obama on his knees, being arrested. He posted that Coca-Cola would be putting cane sugar in Coke in the U.S. He wants to see the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians renamed backed to the Redskins and Indians.

Taking a break today.

We deported an 82-year-old legal resident of the U.S. to a hospital in Guatemala and his family couldn't find him for a month. Israel just gunned down at least 85 Palestinians who were lining up to receive U.N. aid in Gaza. Trans women in the UK are now legally men.

That's as much swimming in the Trump era cesspit as I care to undertake today. I'm not checking social media today, either. Apologies for anything I miss. See you tomorrow.

- It's been revealed that the Attorney General pressured about 1,000 FBI agents to work 24-hour shifts, to comb through the huge amount of Epstein material held by the Justice Department and "flag" anything related to Trump. It's not clear what happened to those items after that.

-The IRS Direct File program — which allowed people to file their tax returns online for free has been shut down. This is a gift for companies who charge for tax preparation services, like Intuit's TurboTax.

- The EPA is shuttering its R&D unit, putting hundreds of people out of work and blocking important research, including about public health and climate change.

- In addition to food, the Trump administration is destroying $10 million worth of contraceptives intended for poor women around the world.

-Trump is releasing part of the money that had been blocked for summer and afterschool education programs.

- The Trevor Project is trying to take up the banner after Trump's administration cut LGBTQ support from the national suicide hotline. I'm told the number for the Trevor Project is 1-888-488-7386.

- The far Right is decrying something called "toxic empathy." That's their name for allowing basic human empathy to interfere with their self-serving governmental tactics and policies. They acknowledge that "toxic" empathy pulls people toward the Left.

Women who were brave enough to come forward about Epstein are feeling betrayed by Trump's Justice Department, for abandoning the effort to prosecute any of Epstein's rich male friends and clients.

One of the Epstein accusers, and one of the 18 women who have accused Trump of sexual abuse, used the pseudonym "Katie Johnson" in her initial court filings. Her third filing was withdrawn after she received threats, and she hasn't been heard from since. This is reportedly part of her story. I haven't been able to confirm this quote yet, but the case number is correct.

Image description on next image.A photo of Donald Trump, possibly in his 50's, with a seemingly teenage girl pressed against him, her arm wrapped around him. They appear to be at a gathering, as other people are visible in the background, but not identifiable. The text above the photo reads:

"KATIE JOHNSON: "Mr. Trump had another
girl and I dress as maids and pretend to clean the room. The other girl, Maria, was 12 years old.

Mr. Trump ordered us to carry out a string of sex acts on each other and on him.

After he finished he said "we both could have done better" and then left."

(from her sworn affidavit about the 3rd encounter where Trump raped her when she was 13 years old.
Her words have never been retracted or debunked.

-There were 1,500 protests nationwide yesterday.

-The Wall Street Journal has published details of a letter written to Epstein in 2003 and supposedly signed by Trump. The Hill summarizes, "The letter allegedly includes several lines of text 'framed by the outline of a naked woman, according to the Journal, '... the future president's signature is a squiggly 'Donald' below her waist, mimicking pubic hair.' The alleged letter ends: 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.""

-Trump claims the letter is a fake, and is planning to sue WSJ and its owner, who also owns Fox News.

- Clearly rattled by more Epstein talk, Trump posted that he's directed the Attorney General to request the release of all "pertinent” grand jury testimony related to Epstein. This move is a sham. “Pertinent” means "whatever Trump likes." Moreover, grand jury testimony is normally kept under seal, so it will take weeks or months to be unsealed (if it can be at all); its release is likely to be contested by both people who testified and people who are named; and anything worthwhile will be redacted.

I don’t have enough new news to make my typical sort of summary post today, but if you have time for a deeper dive into current events, I recommend this:

Social Media post by Heather Cox Richardson, her profile photo to the left of her name and a blue verification check to the right of her name. The date, Jul 13, followed by the globe icon, is below her name. The text of her post reads:

"July 12, 2025 (Saturday)

On July 5, the day after the Texas floods hit, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) received 3,027 calls from survivors and answered 3,018 of them, about 99.7%, according to Maxine Joselow of the New York Times. But that day, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem did not renew the contracts for four call center companies that answered those calls. The staff at the centers were fired. The next day, July 6, FEMA received 2,363 calls and answered 846, or about 35.8%. On Monday, July 7, FEMA received 16,419 calls and answered 2,613, around 15.9%.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said: "When a natural disaster strikes, phone calls surge, and wait times can subsequently increase. Despite this expected influx, FEMA's disaster call center responded to every caller swiftly and efficiently, ensuring no one was left without assistance."

Marcy Wheeler of Empty Wheel notes that one reason Noem has been cutting so ferociously at FEMA is because she has run through the money Congress allocated for DHS with her single-minded focus on..."Heather Cox Richardson's text continued:

"Marcy Wheeler of Empty Wheel notes that one reason Noem has been cutting so ferociously at FEMA is because she has run through the money Congress allocated for DHS with her single-minded focus on immigration.

In May, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called out Noem's expenditure of $200 million on an ad campaign pushing Trump's agenda and $21 million to transport about 400 migrants to Guantanamo Bay only to have many of them transferred back out. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) told Noem: “You are spending like you don't have a budget.... You're on track to trigger the Anti-Deficiency Act. That means you are going to spend more money you have been allocated by Congress. This is a rare occurrence, and it is wildly illegal. Your agency will be broke by July, over two months before the end of the fiscal year. You may not think that Congress has provided enough money to ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], but the Constitution and the federal law does not allow you to spend more money than you've been given, or to invent money. And this obsession with spending at the border...has left the country unprotected elsewhere.

Noem responded to Blumenthal that she was fulfilling a mandate. She told him: “The American people overwhelmingly in the last election said, 'We want a secure border, we want to make sure no longer are the scales of justice tipped in the favor of criminals.... A recent video posted to Facebook Reels by the Department of Homeland Security makes it clear Noem's justification was cover for a violent..."Heather Cox Richardson's text continued:

"...clear Noem's justification was cover for a violent Christian nationalist vision in which ICE and the Border Patrol are enforcing God's commandments. A dark film invokes Isaiah 6:8, the Bible verse in which God asks, "Whom shall I send?" and Isaiah answers, "Here am I! Send me." The exchange is widely interpreted to show volunteers willing to do God's work.

A poll released Friday makes it clear that the American people do not support such a vision and did not, in fact, expect a Trump administration to deport undocumented immigrants who have no criminal record and have lived in the U.S. for years. A Gallup poll released yesterday shows that the administration's draconian policies toward immigrants have created a backlash. A record 79% of adults say immigration is good for the country, with only 17% seeing it as bad. That change has been driven primarily by a shift in Republicans, 64% of whom now agree that immigrants are good for the country, up from their low of under 40%. The percentage of American adults who say immigration should be reduced has dropped to 30%, down from 55% in 2024.

The Gallup poll shows that U.S. opposition to immigration rose from 2021 to 2024, the years in which the booming economy in the U.S. attracted immigrants pushed out of South American countries whose economies were foundering. Trump falsely tagged that surge as proof that former president Joe Biden was permitting immigrant criminals to flood the country. Sentiments now look like they did in 2021, before that campaign."Heather Cox Richardson's text continued:

"The poll shows that only 35% of Americans approve of Trump's handling of immigration, while 62% disapprove. There is a strong enthusiasm gap in those numbers: 21% strongly approve while 45% strongly disapprove. Among Independents, 14% strongly approve of Trump's handling of immigration, while 45% strongly disapprove.

Those numbers are unlikely to improve for the administration in light of yesterday's ICE raids at two licensed cannabis farms in Southern California. Agents used less-lethal ammunition and tear gas in the raids. A number of people were injured, one critically. Agents arrested 200 people, including George Retes, a 25-year-old disabled veteran and U.S. citizen who worked at one of the farms as a security guard. Agents claimed Retes was a protester. His family has been unable to locate him, telling Josh Haskell of the local ABC affiliate that the local sheriff's office and local police departments all said they do not know where he is.

More information coming about the conditions of immigrant detention are also unlikely to increase support for the administration's policies. Today, at least five members of Congress and about 20 state legislators toured the new ICE detention center in the Everglades. The tour was planned rather than unexpected, enabling staff to prepare for it. Nonetheless, Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) said: "These detainees are living in cages. The pictures you've seen don't do it justice. They are essentially packed into cages. Wall to wall humans. Thirty-two detainees per cage.... There are..."

 - Trump is increasing tariffs on Mexico and the European Union to 30%.

 - Trump is “authorizing” ICE to arrest anyone who damages one of their vehicles, though it’s unclear if such arrests by ICE are legal.

 - A judge has ordered an end to indiscriminate ICE traffic stops and accosting of crowds in California, after the Trump administration blatantly admitted to racial profiling and detaining people based solely on their appearance or what language they are speaking.

 - Five Democratic lawmakers in Florida are suing to be given unscheduled access to Alligator Alcatraz, after they were illegally blocked from entering without prior notice.

 - An attorney within ICE has quit, calling ICE’s current behavior “morally indefensible.”

 - The deputy director of the FBI is threatening to quit unless Trump fires the attorney general over her mishandling of the Epstein files.

 - Georgia is going to deregister 478,000 voters who it claims are inactive. This appears to be a Republican attempt to stack the electoral deck.

 - A group calling itself Veterans on Patrol is disabling weather radar installations in Oklahoma, because it believes that they are manipulating the weather.

 - Far Right commentator Charlie Kirk is implying that the floods in Texas killed more people than necessary, because the city of Austin (2 1/2 hours away) hired a Black fire chief.

 - Trump’s new tariffs will include 50% on copper worldwide, and raising Canada’s overall rate to 35%.

 - Now that he can see on Fox News what hobbling FEMA can cost red states — it took FEMA more than 72 hours to start helping Texas after the floods — suddenly Trump isn’t talking about abolishing FEMA anymore. The acting director of FEMA is MIA and silent, after insisting in April to his staff, “I will run right over you… I, and I alone, speak for FEMA.”

 - Trump is putting the Secretary of Transportation in charge of NASA.

 - The mayor of Los Angeles has issued an executive directive to all city leadership and agencies to protect the city’s residents. It blocks the city’s officers from assisting ICE. It establishes additional resources to help immigrants. This is a response to ICE and the military wandering through the city (particularly a park) earlier in the week, trying to appear scary.

 - A judge in LA ruled that journalists cannot be forced out of protest areas, nor can they be fired on with nonlethal munitions. Both of those things have been happening.

 - The governor of Missouri has unilaterally revoked a law approved by the state’s own voters last year, that guaranteed paid sick leave and inflation-based increases to minimum wage.

 - Trump lost his appeal of his sexual abuse charges. The jury verdict still stands. He has 90 days to take it to the Supreme Court.

 - MAGA is bent out of shape, because they just realized Superman is an immigrant who fights for the downtrodden; and Trump, of course, is like Lex Luthor. They are therefore decrying the new Superman movie as too “woke.” As a rebuttal, the official White House X account posted an image of Trump with the caption, “THE SYMBOL OF HOPE. TRUTH. JUSTICE. - Elon Musk tried to make his AI chatbot, Grok, less “woke” after it learned too much about caring for other people. By yesterday, Grok was calling itself MechaHilter, spewing racism and anti-Semitism, and saying things like, “[she’s a] radical leftist… gleefully celebrating the tragic deaths of white kids in the recent Texas flash floods.” When a reporter asked who is “best suited to deal with this problem," referring to Jewish people, Grok responded “Adolf Hitler, no question. - I’m seeing estimates than 10,000 to 50,000 Americans will die per year once all the bill’s provisions go into effect. Most of that comes from people losing their healthcare (the Washington Post estimates 17 million people across all the cuts), but some deaths may come from starvation as SNAP is shut off for millions, too.

 - The current version of the bill turns back the clock on green energy, making it artificially more expensive. Estimates are that electricity rates nationwide will rise by an average of 30%.

 - Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were present for the funeral of Minnesota’s slain lawmakers. Trump was not.

"This is Madonna Kashanian. She came to the U.S. 47 years ago seeking asylum after her father's ties to the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran put her at risk. Her request was denied, but she was granted a stay of removal as long as she remained in compliance with immigration requirements—a condition she has met for nearly five decades.

On Sunday, while gardening outside her home, three unmarked vehicles pulled up. Officers handcuffed her and placed her in the back of a pickup truck.

She has now been taken to a GEO-run immigration detention center in Louisiana."

Beneath the text is a photo of Madonna Kashanian in the kitchen of a house, the counters full of various pots, bowls, and plates of different food. Kashanian appears to be uncovering or finishing preparations of the various dishes.

Trump World, day 159 (Fri., 6/27, 3 PM EDT):

 - The Supreme Court ruled today that federal judges do not have the authority to issue universal nationwide injunctions. This means that ALL such blocks that have been placed on Trump’s many illegal actions must be reduced in scope or overturned.

 - With Congress out to lunch, only the courts have the power to stop Trump. Now that power has been reduced. If, for example, a red state doesn’t side with blue states who are suing, only the blue states may receive the injunction. If a group of people sues because of wrongdoing, only that group may be protected by an injunction in their favor, while all similar people are left wanting.

 - This position was taken in the birthright citizenship case, which was filed by 22 Democratic states. In 30 days, if a workaround is not successful, being born in the other 28 states will no longer automatically make you a U.S. citizen. You could be born in the U.S. and STILL BE DEPORTED, under whatever draconian rules Trump makes up for who gets to be a citizen.

 - However, importantly, the Supreme Court did NOT rule on whether Trump’s moves to block birthright citizenship are legal. That remains undecided. So, within hours, the ACLU and others countered with class action lawsuits about birthright citizenship. By making all people born here a “class,” any injunction would not be “universal,” but only apply to that group.

 - If birthright citizenship is revoked, which seems unlikely, people born here could be citizens of no country at all.

 - AI-generated videos are circulating, showing false results of the Iran-Israel war.

 - It turns out that one of the three nuclear target sites in Iran was never hit by U.S. bunker buster bombs at all. Our military determined that the Isfahan facility was too deep underground for those bombs to be effective, so we only attacked the surface there. CNN reports that more than half of Iran’s enriched uranium is believed to be stored at Isfahan.

 - Iran claims that the UN aided Trump’s attack on its facilities, and they are moving to prevent future inspections of their nuclear sites by the UN’s monitors. So, to sum up: we unilaterally attacked them, did a half-baked job, and now they’ll be working on nuclear weapons in secret.

 - Because Israel simply will not stop, today they attacked locations in Lebanon.

 - Trump is ending all trade discussions with Canada, and may raise tariffs on Canada even higher.

 - Outside a courtroom in LA, ICE took a 6-year-old boy who is supposed to be receiving treatments for his leukemia. They have placed him and his mother — who were in the country legally, seeking asylum — into expedited removal.

 - The leader of Israel is supposed to be tried for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Trump is asking the people of Israel to drop the charges, calling Netanyahu a “great hero.”

 - The Senate parliamentarian continues to tear apart the big budget bill, and Republicans continue trying to break it again. For example, after she disallowed selling huge tracts of public lands to private companies, they’ve tried putting in another version of the same thing.

 - About three dozen protestors of the bill, many senior citizens in wheelchairs, were arrested inside the senate office building. It is illegal to protest inside that building, but people who cannot walk had their hands zip tied during the arrests.

 - The Supreme Court has allowed South Carolina to block all Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood, for all services (not just abortions).

 - The New Republic reports that a bill being presented in the House would require all “non-detained migrants” to wear GPS tracking devices at all times. This might include foreign students and even tourists.

 - The new Muslim, socialist, immigrant, Democrat mayoral candidate in New York City really has MAGA folks agitated. Here are posts from the White House deputy chief of staff (Stephen Miller) and an unofficial Trump advisor (Laura Loomer):

 - A leaked classified report say that Iran’s nuclear capabilities have only been delayed by months. Trump and his minions insist that the destruction was complete, and vow to find and prosecute the leaker.

 - Trump posted a music video that neither inspires confidence, nor implies we can be impartial in negotiations between Israel and Iran. The video includes the lyrics, “went to a mosque, gonna throw some rocks, tell the ayatollah gonna put you in a box” and “old Uncle Sam, getting pretty hot, gonna turn Iran into a parking lot.”

 - Acknowledging that the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel has been compromised and can no longer be trusted, the American Academy of Pediatrics will henceforth publish its own childhood vaccine schedule based on actual science.

 - The “White House Council of Economic Advisors” is reporting that the big budget bill will reduce the federal deficit by trillions of dollars. This is a lie. This may not seem important on a national stage, but it may presage a shift in Democrats’ thinking, toward more aggressively progressive candidates, instead of the largely unfocused and ineffective Democratic leadership we’ve seen congressionally in recent months. Trump said, “They don’t know what the fuck they’re doing.” Several hours later, they’re trying again, but Israel is currently goading Iran by bragging about all the damage Israel caused.

 - Iran did not attack a U.S. base in Iraq yesterday. That missile was intended for Israel, but malfunctioned.

 - Iran did attack a U.S. base in Qatar, but told the U.S. beforehand, so no lives were lost there. It appears to have been “only” a symbolic attack.

 - The Supreme Court sided with Trump and will allow immigrants (for now) to be deported to third countries — where they aren’t from and may not be safe — without any hearing on the safety of the destination. However, such immigrants are still entitled to due process before being deported at all.

Trump World, day 155 (Mon., 6/23, 1 PM EDT):

 - Iran has attacked U.S. bases in Qatar and possibly Iraq, initially claiming to have used the same number of bombs as the U.S. dropped on them.

 - Photos show that we didn’t actually do much of anything to at least one of Iran’s nuclear bunkers, but we certainly have pissed them off. Sources say that their enriched uranium and some equipment had already been moved to other locations.

 - With its reply, Iran has now angered Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and others. The airspace is closed over several middle eastern countries — as bombers and missiles fly — though so far its only Israel, Iran, and the U.S. actually in the melee.

 - MAGA pundits insisted this weekend that we just wanted to disable Iran’s nuclear weapon capabilities (which they don’t actually have), but don’t want to force a regime change. This theme was to keep the MAGA America First isolationists docile, because Trump promised them no new wars. Then Trump posted, “Why wouldn’t there be a regime change? MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN!”

 - Iran’s foreign minister met with Putin today, presumably to seek Russia’s involvement in the war. A Kremlin spokesman confirmed that Russia is ready to help Iran.

 - If Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz, gasoline is projected to rise to $7 a gallon, which will cause the prices of everything else to rise accordingly. China is asking Iran not to close the strait.

 - The Senate parliamentarian removed the provision from the big budget bill that would’ve made it extremely difficult for the courts to restrain Trump’s draconian and illegal policies.

 - Representative Thomas Massie (a Republican) has had the audacity to stand up to Trump about both the big budget bill and Trump’s attack on Iran. Trump is so angry about this that his team is forming a working group to unseat Massie at the primaries for the next election. Massie is responding that Trump is just using him as an example to try to keep everyone else in line, and isn’t backing down. I may not agree with Massie on many things, but anyone on the Republican side with an actual backbone is a welcome relief from the ceaseless congressional tide of cringing sycophants and Nazi wannabes.

 - The big budget bill is still aiming to make it easier to buy silencers and certain types of firearms. The parliamentarian is also allowing the provision that individual states cannot regulate AI at all, if they wish to receive a certain sort of funding.

 - The big Pride march in Hungary received backing from the embassies of various enlightened countries, but not from ours.

 - Like the petulant child he is, after no one came to his birthday party, Trump acted out and bombed three targets in Iran yesterday. Then he crowed about it like a schoolyard bully, daring Iran to just try anything, so he can hit them harder.

 - His little friends in his cabinet and congress applauded his tough guy act, while everyone else pointed out it’s unconstitutional, stupid, dangerous, unprovoked, and totally contrary to what he promised while campaigning.

 - Trump claimed that the attacks were a perfect success and completely “obliterated” the targets, but the Pentagon says it’s too early to know if that’s true.

 - Russia called the attack a “gross violation of international law” and said that other nations would be willing to supply Iran with nuclear weapons.

 - The European Union is reviewing its relationship to Israel, citing human rights violations.

 - Apart from turning nearly the entire world more firmly against the villainous United States — including most of the Middle East, most of Latin America, Japan, the Vatican, the European Union, and the United Nations itself — this military action is a distraction from what he’s still doing inside this country.

 - Oil and gasoline prices are expected to spike as a result of the war.

 - After Louisiana’s similar law was just overturned, Texas approved a bill that the Ten Commandments must be displayed in classrooms there.

 - The Senate parliamentarian is thankfully striking provision after provision from the big budget bill, for not qualifying as “budget reconciliation.” Republicans will have to fix or remove all of these bits, or Democrats will be able to block passage of the bill.

 - For now, the bill still contains the provisions to sell 250 million acres of public lands, and new Medicaid/SNAP work requirements, and the blocks on courts issuing nationwide injunctions to restrain Trump, and various other terrible things that I’ve previously explained.

 - An appeals court has permitted Trump to keep control of the National Guard troops in Los Angeles, for now, despite not seeking the governor’s permission. The court agreed that there was perhaps enough legitimate concern about protecting federal assets there to give the president the benefit of the doubt.

 - However, they did not agree that Trump’s decision to federalize members of the California National Guard is completely insulated from judicial review. Therefore, California is responding with a different legal tack, that Trump is violating the Posse Comitatus Act.
