I’m moving here on Friday. The first time in decades that I’ve had a garden. I like gardens. I don’t like gardening. This is pretty well a blank slate the moment. I’ll be attempting to make it look lovely with as little effort as possible.

I found my father’s pocket microscope while packing for my move. I’d forgotten I had it. Dad bought this when I was little so it’s about 65 years old. 25x magnification about right for reading cooking instructions on frozen food packing.

A pocket microscope about the size of a fountain pen. It is chrome with black focus ring & eyepiece.

I was given some £ which I sensibly splashed on a lovely used Panasonic Lumix S9. A disadvantage of a full frame camera is that the lenses cost £huge. The good news is that vintage M42 lenses are available & affordable.

I designed & printed an improved case for my multi colour macro photo light. The light has an on/off switch & two rotary encoders. One encoder selects the light colour, the other the brightness. Can also quick step through 6 pre-defined colours by pressing the colour encoder.

I finally completed my RGB macro photo light. Decided the 7-LED array wasn't bright enough & switched to this 8x8 array of WS2812 LEDs. Very useful ESP8266 board with on board 18650 battery holder & charge circuit from Amazon. Battery is probably over specified for this application.

My father caught polio in (I think) 1947. He spent some time in an iron lung, was eventually able to breathe unaided but never walked again. That’s me hanging on to one of his wheels in around 1958. Some people wonder why I am so pro-science & so angry with anti vaccine propaganda. Here’s why.

Why pay £30 for an RGB photo light when for £29 I can buy the parts & make my own? Lolin D1 mini (ESP8266), battery shield, 7 LED shield, rotary encoders for colour & brightness, 3.7v LiPo battery. Coded in VS Code & C++. 3D printed case to follow.

Afon Teifi at Henllan this morning. This is the lowest I've ever seen the river. The fallen tree washed there by a flood is a good 3 metres above the current level.

This is interesting — I recently took a DNA test, mostly to explore possible causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. I also discovered I have 7% DNA from south Wales. I hadn’t been aware of any Welsh ancestry. Coincidentally, I now live in that light brown region.
