The implication of the ecological crises is that people are actively and consciously compromising their children's future. Optimism and hope, without self-reflection and meaningful action, serve only to mask cynical indifference.

The horror and barbarism of such experiments, their morally indefensible nature, perpetually elude the writers and editors at @wired.com. The latter fetishize and adore lifeless machines but view conscious beings--animals--with undisguised contempt.

@georgemonbiot.bsky.social Victim blaming on both sides. Cows exploited for their milk aren't the problem, neither in this context or in that of global warming and species extinction. Those who brutally exploit them are.

Moreover, animal agriculture and the fisheries are the leading drivers of species extinction. Even if we believe other animals to be fundamentally worthless - which I believe we have to if we're going to use and kill them without need - it's against our own interests to harm them. So why do we?

whisperaway.bsky.social @whisperaway.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
Does it therefore follow that we can violate the dignity of other animals (inc. humans), and brutalize them without need? It stands to reason catch-and-release fishing is both stressful and terrifying for the individual being caught, even assuming they don't sustain injuries that kill them later.

It's not just because of short-term financial interests that nothing is done. It's ideological. Degrading and brutalizing other animals is more important to us than anything else. It's who we are. Even climate activists dissociate when it comes to the animal system's destruction of the biosphere.
