VOLITION - Subdue the regret. Dust yourself off, proceed. You'll get it in the next life, where you don't make mistakes. Do what you can with this one, while you're alive.

Supernatural fans are the closest thing I've ever encountered to "friends in a high school drug PSA." I'm sure I would enjoy crystal meth! Still not going to try it tho

Low-key obsessed with the student who, in a sea of water bottles, brought an entire carton of Tropicana orange juice to today's teaching session. Get that vitamin C, guy

today's hellscape: imagine 1) your phone screen is broken. completely unusable 2) you have adhd and need five alarms every morning 3) you're exhausted bc you stayed up all night buying a replacement phone now imagine you have a garbage phone with NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF WITHOUT USING THE SCREEN

No I've chosen the path of heroic self sacrifice which is why I haven't named the song. The infection will die with me 💪☠️

The worst thing about finding a viral video after its shelf date is this fucking song is stuck in my head and I have no one to complain about it to

Non-fiction uses a classification system I invented based on usecase and what is most intuitive to me. Scifi/fantasy series are all double stacked on a shelf and arranged by how pretty they look. Everything else is done by author's surname, except for the comics which I haven't gotten around to yet

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

Top level organisation is by language (with non-English languages kept together), then non-fiction, poetry, short fiction, danmei*, scifi/fantasy series*, all other long fiction, comics & graphic novels. *separated out due to being pretty

Murderbot I'm very fond of, and I'm on the queue for The Raven Tower audiobook. Glad it'll be worth the wait!!

(it was a good movie. Once, in the theatre, was precisely the right location and number of times to watch it)

I don't want to wade into the discourse du jour but everyone complaining about the Odyssey leaving things out is tripping. You want MORE scenes? I wish Nolan had taken a bushwhacker to the damn poem, I spent more time in that theatre than Odysseus did on Calypso's island

It is! I wasn't joking about buying it for work tho, it's been on my radar but I was on the fence bc I wasn't sure if it was YA, which is outside scope, and I usually only buy recent releases. But if people are still reccing it that's a good sign for its longevity. And then I'll have a copy to hand!

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

Ahhhhh, okay, you gotta lead with "homoerotic" that bumps it up the list. And I do enjoy "please read this bad book/watch this bad show" as a genre of recommendation. Okay, sold

Howwww sexist are we talking, so I can prepare myself emotionally? That's been my main reason for avoiding delving too deep into classic fantasy

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

Ooh, I didn't know about that one! And what to do you know, ebook available at the library....

100

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

This looks lovely! I wonder if my local queer bookstore has a copy...

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

I have The Incandescent on order from the library and the Tainted Cup waiting on my shelf 👀 I'll bump it up the priority list!

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

I've been a little afraid of Book of the New Sun (its density is legendary) but I'll bump it up the list. And broken protagonist plus body horror is EXACTLY my language

Recommendations are what I asked for! And I steal so many furtively off your thread it's nice to get tailored ones 🥰 I don't really do YA or zombies but I haven't read any Clive Barker apart from Abarat when I was a teen. Adding Weaveworld to the list

I read Elder Race earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Tyrant Philosophers next you say?

000

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

I avoid YA generally, yeah. I've never really had that much affinity for Naomi Novik---her books are fine, but I don't seek them out---but if they're not YA I might order a copy for work and then have a cheeky skim 👀

Ancillary Justice is already on the shelf! Incredible series! I'm a hard sell for dragons generally but I'll look into Havemercy. Thank you!!

For complicated loyalty reasons I can't read Seth Dickinson, but the Arkady Martine has been on my shelf for ages! Maybe I'll pick it up next... I've added the second series you mentioned to my library queue and Starving Saints and another Emily Tesh book are already on there 🥰

"Drive your plow over the bones of the dead" by Olga Tocarczuk for bonkers works of literary fiction where all I can say is, read the first page and see if the voice grabs you... And "Works of Vermin" by Hiron Ennes for my fave book of the year that I'm trying to make everyone read

jin guangyao's sticks and dicks restaurant/funzone @whenasinsilks.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

Okay. "Lote," by Shola Von Reinhold for a dizzying, bitingly funny exploration of art and identity. I can't begin to think how to describe this book properly but it's a masterpiece. "Things we lost in the fire," by Mariana Enriquez, for chewy, socially aware, literary short horror.

Rec me a book based on my "sci-fi/fantasy series I bought in hard copy because I couldn't bear not to have a copy I could touch" shelf (standalones don't live on this shelf but recs for them very much appreciated also)

Colourful bookshelf featuring numerous Discord books, Lays of the Hearth fire by Victoria Goddard, the Radiant Emperor duology by Shelley Parker Chan, the Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir, the Divine Cities by Robert Jackson Bennett, the Broken Earth by N K Jemisin, Machineries of Empire by Yoon Ha Lee, Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy, and Robin Hobb's RotE).

For me tied between Isabelle Adjani in La Reine Margot and Denzel Washington in Much Ado About Nothing

This is it entirely. Maybe the one real reason to write orig fic is just so we can all feed each other 😔

In retrospect if I wanted the tradescantia to SURVIVE I probably shouldn't have named it after Jiang Yanli

I have zero evidence that that's the deal with her! And the possibility of her being simply too Middle Class to talk about sex is also quite high. I simply don't trust her enough to rule it out. And I'm just saying, that vein tends to be heavily seamed with misogyny.
