On Oct. 6, 1951, a live Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcast hit our 89.7 FM airwaves. 20 years later, we became an NPR charter member. 75 years later, we're still proudly broadcasting what matters to you across radio, TV, digital media + beyond. Thank you for welcoming us all this time!

Today is our 75th birthday! 🎉 Since our first broadcast on Oct. 6, 1951, we’ve strived to tell stories that matter –– whether that be through cooking with Julia Child, exploring space with NOVA, or delivering news with FRONTLINE and GBH News. Thank you for making these 75 years so special.
An image of Julia Child at her kitchen studio is displayed on the GBH digital mural with a party hat superimposed onto it. Accompanying text reads "Happy Birthday, GBH!"

Turning 75 next week (!) and it's still our comfort show, too. 😉
u/Aggravating_Hippo_2 in the r/Arthur subreddit : "Am I the 20 year old who still watches Arthur? It’s my comfort show. I literally know every episode in and out, and I can’t get enough of it. I feel embarrassed to admit that I still watch it as a college student, but I know I can’t be the only one."

57 years ago, Judy Griffin's car broke down en route to Woodstock. She poked her head inside a nearby 1967 VW Beetle to ask for a ride... and found Jerry Griffin sitting in the backseat. More than half a century, two sons and five grandchildren later, the couple still haven't left each other's side.

Jim calls the nonprofit "Adam's Parachute," which honors his son in more than just namesake. Just a day before his own death, Adam had saved the life of a young man who had overdosed. Jim sees the parachute as a metaphor for this; Adam had one parachute, and he gave it to someone else.

Two years ago, Jim Faust lost his son, Adam, to addiction. Jim found solace in fly fishing, rooting himself in the peace and calm of nature. Then, he decided to share that solace with people facing similar struggles by starting a nonprofit where he teaches fly fishing to those in addiction recovery.

PBS kids have the best sick days.
Thread from @thecoolestkate reads "In kindergarten I once stayed home sick from school watching PBS all day and learned to draw a fruit basket (on notebook paper). When I gave it to my mom she was so impressed, she said the banana looked real and she bragged to other people and treated it like treasure and now ~30 years later I’m an artist. I was always an artist, but I first believed it because she did."

Organizers charged fans $38 per seat on the buses (less than half the price of the commuter rail fare). The funds went toward the cost of transportation, a few alcoholic beverages and water provided to passengers on board, as well as more than $16,000 in charitable donations to local organizations.

This year, #PublicMediaGivingDays carry even more meaning. Last year, we shared that federal funding for public media was at risk. Today, that funding is gone. Community support is now the only way to move GBH and public media forward!

Similar to able-bodied curling, wheelchair curling players slide stones into what is called a "house" across the ice, aiming to get as close to the center of the target as possible. The biggest difference? There is no sweeping. Instead, wheelchair curlers throw using a delivery stick.

@vulture.com loved @gbhnews.bsky.social's SCRATCH & WIN as much as we did, naming it one of their top 10 narrative podcasts of the year! 👏👏 Appreciate the shout-out, @nwquah.bsky.social!
5. SCRATCH AND WIN. There are actually few stories more central to the texture of contemporary American life than the story of gambling at the moment (where’s the Kalshi market for this list?), which makes this Ian Coss series feel kind of essential in terms of understanding how everything came to be. Coss traces the unlikely rise of America’s most successful state lottery, born from a moment in the 1970s when Massachusetts officials set out to curb organized crime by challenging its power in illegal gambling markets … partly by taking over the market themselves. What follows is a sharply drawn account for how a government experiment in law-and-order pragmatism evolved into a cultural and economic force.

Immigrants that were already approved to be naturalized at Faneuil Hall in Boston last week were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that they are now not eligible. (via @gbhnews.bsky.social)
Screengrab from a GBH News article by Sarah Betancourt: Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years and involves immigrants acquiring a green card, extensive interviews, background checks, classes and a citizenship test. The naturalization ceremony is the final step to the process, where the oath of allegiance and a citizenship certificate are granted.

Immigrants approved to be naturalized went to Faneuil Hall Thursday — known as the country’s cradle of liberty — for that long-awaited moment to pledge allegiance to the United States. But instead, as they lined up, some were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that they couldn’t proceed due to their countries of origin.
