This weekend I learned that even with: - good insulation - window shutters - triple glazing on half our windows (double on the rest) - maximum night-time ventilation ...there is no way to keep our flat naturally cool over such an extended heatwave

Just did a small update of Tidy GHG Inventories: lambwf.github.io/Tidy-GHG-Inv... 81 countries have now submitted inventory data with their Biennial Transparency Reports. Quite a few still haven't (its 6 months past the deadline btw).

The land use change (LULUCF) sector is pretty confusing, since it can be a source of emissions (deforestation, disturbances) as well as a source of removals (regrowth, management). Including LULUCF can speed up, slow down, or change the overall dynamic of economy-wide emissions.
A dot plot comparing the change in national GHG emissions over the past 5 years with (x axis) and without (y axis) the LULUCF sector

Sweden is one of a handful of countries that has been reporting net negative GHG emissions for a number of years. lambwf.github.io/Tidy-GHG-Inv... If you are wondering "how is that possible?" its because the definition of land use change removals in inventories is very inclusive...

Heres what happens when you have a major wildfire event and still account for it in your inventory: Portugal 2017 (~18MtCO2)

Presumably re-growth after prior fire events. I need to do some more digging about how these are estimated in practice, though. And yeah, good point about "natural". There are many unresolved issues there... here is a box we wrote in the UNEP Gap Report 2024.

Countries can classify emissions from wildfires (and subsequent removals from regrowth) as a memo item in their national greenhouse gas inventories, excluding them from the total. So far Australia and Canada have done this - including Australia's massive 2020 wildfire.
A graphic showing national greenhouse gas emissions of Australia and Canada from 1990 to 2022, based on data from their national GHG inventories. Emissions and removals are also shown for the inventory memo "natural disturbances on managed land", which would influence national totals if they were included. The 2020 wildfire in Australia released GHG emissions equivalent to all anthropogenic emissions that year - but a full accounting of the event should also take into account removals from subsequent regrowth, as shown in later years.

Indonesia emissions - hopefully phasing out coal doesn't mean phasing in bioenergy. Do we know more about what exactly the "75 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy" target means? lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep...

A figure showing large reductions in Denmark's GHG emissions, driven almost entirely by power sector decarbonisation. Emissions in other sectors (transport, agriculture, buildings, industry and waste) have remained stable.

3. Small open craft like this Caledonia Yawl, based on Scottish and Norwegian designs. Seems crazy but these could handle the open ocean around Shetland and the north Atlantic. Ken Duxbury writes about sailing a small open craft from Greece to Scotland in The Lugworm Chronicles.

2. Pilot cutters. Made for staying afloat and dropping off pilots in the Bristol Channel and other Atlantic waters. John Muir has a first hand account of life on these in Messing About in Boats. I'll never understand why harbours are filled with white plastic super yachts while these exist!

Reasons why emissions went up last year
Emissions increased in China, India and international aviation, and decreased in the EU, USA, Japan and the land use sector
