In 1994 Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal for a promise that its borders would be respected. Congress just sanctioned Russian oil. On Friday the sanctions came off, and Zelenskyy got the blame for diesel prices. Trump finally comes out of the closet with full on support for Putin #art

Flower Weaver, woodcut. A memorial for my wife Karen, who died of breast cancer in 2017. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Get the mammogram. Fund the research. Grants frozen, labs losing staff, budgets on stopgaps. Research delayed is treatment delayed. #art

Trump went on TV to prove the 2020 election was stolen. His evidence confirmed Russia helped put him there. NATO is reorganizing around American absence. Hegseth frets about testosterone. Our strings are still being pulled. That Russia Thing. #art

Orwell: a boot stamping on a human face, forever. ICE’s new device, the G.L.O.V.E., drives 380 volts into bare skin under a no-bid, $20M contract. No spark, no barbs, no published oversight. Just a hand closing on a wrist and a body folding in pain no camera can prove. #art

Sixty-one years ago today Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. On April 29, 2026, six justices gutted it. The SCOTUS 6 woodcuts document the banality of justices who abandon justice for partisan ends. America, Unfinished?! WaterFire Arts Center, Providence, through August 30. #art

Russia’s escalating missile strikes now include North Korean KN-23s again, built with Russian battlefield data. Ukraine’s Patriot interceptors, the only defense against them, have gone undelivered since February, redirected to the Iran war. #art

Fauci pled the Fifth before Congress this week. Not really about him. It’s a warning to any scientist who contradicts this administration: step out of line, face prison. Convenient timing too, with Iran, inflation, and Epstein files all needing a distraction. My 2020 print, revisited. #art

Garden Variety Sisyphus, 2019. Amazon’s tax bill dropped from $9B to $1.2B last year. Profits up 44.5%. 30,000 workers cut. Musk killed other companies’ contracts at DOGE and touched none of his own. These are the flowers they carry, and call it weight. #art

De Fabrica. Hubris as policy. Robert Kagan writes in The Atlantic that this war has left the US weaker and more isolated than at any time since the 1930s. The ceasefire is breaking down. Iran controls the Strait. Our alliances are fractured. #art

Ukraine’s own strikes on Russian refineries and occupied Crimea’s grid have pressured Moscow more than years of diplomacy, even as Kyiv’s fate gets debated at the NATO summit in Ankara. “Ukrainians Will Resist” isn’t a slogan looking backward. It’s still happening. #art

Sealing the block I’ll be printing “The Bridge” from this week. The woodcut is a portrait of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, site of Bloody Sunday of the Civil Rights movement. And again, the site of marches protesting Supreme Court decisions gutting the Civil Rights Act of 1965 #art

In the Congo people die of Ebola because Elon Musk’s DOGE dismantled the agency that was responsible for disease surveillance. Waste and fraud he claimed, not compatible with ‘America First’. In Musk’s view , USAID was a criminal enterprise funding biotech weapon research including Covid-19. #art

Guide paper down. First cut coming. The Edmund Pettus Bridge, Selma 1965. People crossed it and were beaten for the right to vote. Confederate stars fragment through the understructure. The Civil War found new architecture.

Never money for healthcare, education, clean water, childcare; yet suddenly 1.8 billion is available to pay off these insurrectionists. As in this woodcut We the People are drowning in a sea of chaos; enough so that many, like the helmeted figure, have turned away out of self preservation. #art

Judges ruled many of the detentions illegal. The administration held people anyway. Four died at Adelanto asking for a doctor. ICE stopped paying for medical care in October. This is not bureaucratic failure. It is policy. Separation, 2026. #art

Yesterday thousands marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Same bridge. Same fight. Sixty years later. Callais is Jim Crow 2.0. People should not still be crossing that bridge for the right to vote. And yet here they are. The bridge holds. The movement holds. #art

The KKK changed the color of their robes. Over the dissent of Jackson, Sotomayor, and Kagan, the Roberts court finished what Appomattox could not. The Confederacy didn’t wait. The new Jim Crow calls for our overwhelming response at the polls. #art

The court has eliminated federal abortion protections, gutted the Voting Rights Act, and expanded the legal architecture of white Christian nationalism. These are not close calls dressed up as jurisprudence. They are outcomes and Justice Roberts wonders why the court is held in such low regard. #art

Justice Jackson wasn’t letting the hypocrisy of Alito fly under the radar in her dissent of Louisiana v Callais; the dismantling of the voting rights act. Especially, in regards for the Purcell principle; that the courts should not interfere with rulings altering rules on the eve of elections. #art

Alito appears here collaged into Dürer’s 1500 witch woodcut. The lurking figure is Matthew Hale, a 17th-c. jurist, witch trial judge, cited by Alito in Dobbs. The past is never past. These figures recur. Art exists to make the pattern visible. #art

I remember duck and cover. A useless precaution, sold to children as protection. We never solved that one. Sandy Hook. Uvalde; the price of freedom? The men being shielded at the Hilton ordered the bombs that fell on a girls school in Iran. What is the lesson? Ballrooms for the oligarchs? #art

Longfellow’s hunters are not a mob but a civic body, filing in from white-columned houses, invoking scripture, passing resolutions. The most consequential destructions proceed not through frenzy but through paperwork. He saw them clearly in 1863 and trusted we could still recognize them. #art

The ice was here, the ice was there, the ice was all around.” Isolation hardens into crisis. We’re all traveling the same sea. “The Birds of Killingworth” is work in progress. Longfellow emerges from the block, positioned in the composition as witness to the ecological catastrophe his 1863 poem recounted. The shavings fall, the poet appears, and with him the hope that we are still capable of learning.” #art

After the murder of Goode and Pretti, Noem and Bovino came across as too extreme. Just like Nixon, Trump is sending in a plumber. Markwayne Mullin’s only job is to stop the flow of bad press. A man with no credentials to make empty promises of reform so the cruelty can continue unabated. #art
