August 21, 1949 - a damaging M8.1 #earthquake (one of the largest ever recorded in North America) struck off #HaidaGwaii. Shaking was so strong that it was hard to stand. 77 years ago tonight - a M8.1 #earthquake off #HaidaGwaii ruptured a 500-km-long segment of the Queen Charlotte Fault ("Canada's San Andreas Fault"). The average slip along the #fault was ~5 m. Shaking was so strong that it was hard to stand. More than 100 aftershocks were felt on Haida Gwaii. ⚒️🧪🇨🇦

There was a little shake on the west coast of Graham Island that USGS posted about (and Emergency BC also mentioned) but curiously NRCanada does not have listed

Great question - thanks! It is a complicated region, with a number of faults (and different types). There is a transform fault (QCF) that extends from southeast AK to south of Haida Gwaii and the Haida Gwaii thrust fault (e.g., the 2012 M7.8 earthquake). Research is still underway - so "other"?

Interesting that USGS lists the major fault types - not sure why Haida Gwaii is listed as "other" but suspect it is due to recent studies about the newly emerging subduction fault (?) paging @earthquakeguy.bsky.social

What an incredible technology via Andriod phones - built in accelerometers pick up seismic waves and send out alerts, in an area without an early warning system #earthquakes @earthquakeguy.bsky.social
This image is of a map showing the Venezuela area around Caracas and the number of Android phones that picked up the seismic waves that then sent alerts out to millions of Android users in the area warning them of the earthquakeA picture of an article; Jose Flores was driving to see his family on Wednesday in Caracas, Venezuela when a loud earthquake alert went off on his wife's Google Android phone 6 seconds later, he felt the Earth starting to shake. Venezuela does not have a national early warning system of its own, but people with Android phones received alerts from Google's earthquake alert system, which can pull data for more than 2 billion phones equipped with built-in accelerometers. The same sensor that detects rotation on the screen can also sense vibrations from seismic wavesA picture from a screenshot of an article: the epicenters of the quakes in Venezuela were beneath highly populated areas within 3 seconds. Phones sensed the p waves of the first quake said Mark stogiatis, a principal engineer at Google who works on the early warning system. 6 seconds later the system identified an earthquake and sent out the first alerts. The system is continuously receiving and processing data as an earthquake develops the system often tweaks the magnitude time, location and alert area. Google system sensed the increasing magnitude of the Venezuela earthquakes and the alert region grew as the earthquake crew several seconds. After the earthquake, a second stronger earthquake hit and more alerts were sent as the seismic waves from both events overlapped each other. The system treated it as a single large event alerting those experiencing shaking from both events he said
