We’d like to take a moment to congratulate our first Artist-in-Residence, Joanne C. Hillhouse (@jhohadli.bsky.social), for making the 2025 Commonwealth Short Story Prize shortlist with her piece, “Jumbie Pond”!! 🤩🇦🇬🎊❤️ (📸 by Annetta Jackson)
Photo of Antiguan author, Joanne C. Hillhouse, sitting in a grassy field and surrounded by some of her books. She is wearing an orange dress that compliments her deep brown skin, and she is holding an open journal in her hands. As she contemplates its contents with her head slightly bent, orange and blue earrings — large and ornate — dangle at the sides of her face.

In “No Human Being is Illegal,”(2006), Howard Zinn reminds us that “discrimination against the foreign born has a long history, going back to the beginning of the nation” & running up to the “Patriot Act.” For the record, the vicious hostility meted out to immigrants has been a bi-partisan affair.

Today, we’re sharing a word on colonisation and the psyche of the coloniser from Aimé Césaire’s 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮 👇🏾
Text:
“First we must study how colonization works to decivilize the colonizer, to brutalize him in the true sense of the word, to degrade him, to awaken him to buried instincts, to covetousness, violence, race hatred, and moral relativism”

—Aimé Césaire from “Discourse on Colonialism”

Visual description: The text in this image is white and rests against a vertical gradient background of red, orange, and green. Surrounding the text are deep green leaves, as well as yellow sunflowers and white flowers. The Intersect logo — an “i” consisting of blue, pink, and white circles — sits in the bottom righthand corner of this image.

the dismantling of (cross-disciplinary) studies of liberation reminds me of Sylvia Wynter’s invitation to think about academic work that has and can radically shift our present system of knowledge. pedagogy can foster rebellion. research has the capacity to undo harm and learn about resistance.

Happy #InternationalWomen’sDay from the Intersect Antigua-Barbuda team! 🇦🇬✨
Digital art piece of 4 Queeribbean people enjoying Carnival. Descriptions of people from left to right. Non-binary, transmasc, Indigenous person smiling and putting a peace sign up in the air. They are wearing an orange crop top, with a black binder peaking out from underneath, and red shorts. Orange gems and glitter surround their eyes, and their hair is wavy — flowing down to their shoulders. Next to them is an older black woman with her grey hair pulled into a large puff atop her head. Her smile is as radiant as the red gems and glitter surrounding her eyes. She is wearing an orange, one-piece bodysuit with sheer black tights. Next to this woman is a young queer man with wavy brown hair and a silver prosthetic arm. He is smiling widely while waving his arm into the air. He is wearing orange shorts, with orange glitter and gems around his eyes. To the right and infront of him is a black woman, smiling brightly and winking at the viewer. Her hair is blue, and one arm is outstretched infront of her friends. Red glitter and gems adorn her eyes, and she is wearing an orange bralette with red shorts. All four people are on the road — surrounded by large, towering trees.
