Have you played either of Namco's 'Splatterhouse' games on the Mega Drive?

From the vaults: Splatterhouse for the FM Towns. This was the closest we'd get to an arcade-perfect port of the original Splatterhouse for years. Anyone here ever own an FM Towns (or FM Towns Marty) and a copy of Splatterhouse?

A few pics of the Maskless Rick mode from the iOS Splatterhouse for @west-mansion.bsky.social. Didn't get very because playing this game on a touch screen with only a single life point is pretty hard...

Which Jennifer do you prefer? The classic "damsel-in-distress turns into a monster or even a mindless beast" Jenny, or "not quite so damsel-in-distress but ends up getting possessed at the end and that cliffhanger is never resolved" Jenny?

What's a poster you had in your room growing up? I didn't have any posters on my walls until I was in high school. And when I finally found one I wanted, I thought my mom would blow a gasket. Surprisingly, she did not. Can't find the *actual* poster, but it looked kind of like this (see alt text).

*Almost* the poster I had hanging in my room when I was in high school, except the one I had, had at least two or three more models on it, and the bikinis weren't quite as conservative as they are in this picture. Still, this is the closest picture I could find.

Last night, my sleep-deprived brain came up with one of my more ludicrous ideas: Castlevania: The '80s Musical! I won't go into any details unless asked, but I have a tracklisting of songs and ideas for some characters. Yes, I may in fact be crazy. Why do you ask? www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpYh...

From the vaults: an iOS port of the original Splatterhouse was released back in 2010. It contained an extra feature: Maskless Rick mode, in which you only had one heart to survive the game. I personally never got to play this one, but here's a screenshot of it in action.

I remember that day quite well: a friend bought it, along with both SM64 and Pilotwings. I remember planning to buy one myself, but once the "gee whiz!" factor faded away, I was a lot less enthused. So I bought a Saturn instead, with an ST-Key so I could play imports. I call that a win for me.

And now, my Castlevania Bottom Five. Out of all the Castlevania games I've played, these are the worst. Some of them have things I like, but all of them belong at the bottom. You'll see that some games with a horrible rep aren't here. Since I never played them, can't give an honest opinion of them.

This list sucks. Compilations should be excluded. Lords of Shitshow belongs in a blender. And Metroidvania domination at the top? No. I'm going to make my own Castlevania best of list! With blackjack and hookers! In fact, forget the Castlevania list and the blackjack! Ah, screw the whole thing.

My origin video game that basically came to define me. Okay. The two runners-up would be Yars' Revenge and Haunted House on the Atari 2600. But the one that finally said "this is it! This is really it!" is Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, also for the Atari 2600.

Cover of Pitfall II: Lost Caverns (not THE Lost Caverns, that was the title of the Sega arcade version of this).

From the vaults: the only known official picture of the original Dr. West. The only time this picture was used, to my knowledge, was in the instruction manual of the PC Engine port of Splatterhouse.

FUFUFU..

Hey, it's Dr. West! He's cooking up something in his lab that may or may not involve the evil-looking little creature in that tube.

This picture was included on a CD of artwork that was sent to me by Namco Bandai when Splatterhouse (2010) was in development.

From the vaults: a piece of fanart titled "The Meat Cleaver" by chuckporn. The "cleaver" in question is a carcass splitter manufactured in the late 1800s.

From chuckporn: "This is a meat cleaver that I own. It is 36 inches long with a 15 inch blade, It weighs 10 lbs maybe more. It's called a carcass splitter and it was made in the late 1800s. It also has the number 13 stamped on the blade. Original wood. The corpse I bought in '97."

I've talked about a lot of retro games besides Splatterhouse here, and with good reason. I've mainly sat out the last three console generations. But as I've been casually dabbling in them on and off since the 360 era, I've found some games I've liked (no legacy sequels, though). Here they are.

"Feel the wind in your hair..." Okay, there's a big anniversary today: the 40th since the release of Sega's sublime arcade racer OUTRUN! Sometime between today and the 25th in 1986, arcade goers were being taken on a Sega multi-route race for the first time. Share the OutRun love, peeps <3

For a time (a very brief time, as it turned out), I streamed videogames on YouTube. Then I decided that I didn't want to do that anymore, and I moved on, but I did follow plenty of streamers. Nowadays, I'm not even really interested in watching these streams anymore (aside from a select few).

These announcements for the new Metroud and Kirby games, great. I'm not interested. But I know that a lot of you are, as is my middle daughter. That last makes me happy, because I introduced her to Metroid and Kirby in the first place. And I'm also happy for everyone else that's excited for these.
