We must make everyone who was a part of this horror pay for their part in it. Starting with Stephen Miller.

Also, the Turning test was a purely behavioral test because Turing thought it was "meaningless" to have a conversation about whether computers could think. That is, it explicitly and by design says nothing about sentience.

A cool thing about humans is that we can be certain today and then change our minds as we accumulate new experiences. That said, no definition of sentience I subscribe to encompasses stateless transient systems, but you do you.

I like this idea, but a dollar per search is out of my budget.

My university used EBSCO and it just can't do what Google Scholar does. Not at all. I've been having better luck with WorldCat through my county library.

We can know an LLM doesn't have subjectivity or sentience because it doesn't even have persistence. Or are you proposing that it's the harness that's sentient?

I can't imagine a reality in which they wouldn't. I can imagine a future in which the US helps them out with that, especially if Israel continues on their path and stops being able to influence US policy.

I know when I see tuition increases announced every year, it sure feels like the price is going up. Like most people, I suspect, I don't adjust for inflation in my head.

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

Exactly! It's an advertising slogan to convey negative opinion, not tactical voting instructions.

"Don't rank" seemed to work pretty well for Mamdani and Landers. Seems like a fairly standard attack ad format to me.

I was lucky enough to stay home for almost a year after my younger boy was born, and wow, it was such a gift. If we valued kids, we'd give that gift to everyone.

People have been too successful at blocking data centers, so they're putting them on federal land, and my guess is they try to exempt them from state regulation while they're at it.

America.gov launched today--a DOGE initiative to use AI to deliver public services. Child lying facedown on a frozen lake as the image accompanying the question: "How can I invest in my child's future" is just incredible. Way to go AI
Image of a child lying facedown on a froze lake. above is the portal where you ask AI questions about government services. the question matching this image is: "How can I invest in my child's future?"

I'm imagining a future where we restart global aid and then run ads calling attention to the people we helped and thanking the public for facilitating it. Instill a little pride in what we do.

There are some important differences, but yeah, more the same than not. What changed is mostly style and velocity, not their goals.

This looks fantastic and I'm looking forward to reading it! Right now, I work in the land of A/B testing and optimization, which is exactly the opposite of this. I hate it. Thank you for introducing better ways to think about UX.

On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Yes! I've yet to meet a stay-at-home parent who wouldn't love to have access to free childcare so they can at least get some of that work done in peace. I like the Norway system, and also, seems like childcare should be available to everyone with kids, regardless of employment.

What should the next president do with Trump’s White House ballroom? “Knock it down” says @anneapplebaum.wsocial.eu. She argues the ballroom is about more than architecture: “It’s Trump seeking to remake the institution itself.”
