bought this 2” thick tome by a burlington-based author, a few days after seeing it advertised in our local paper. it’s good, but as expected, i can only handle it in spurts. www.sevendaysvt.com/arts-culture...

thought i’d do more painting on this trip. been hauling my materials around. i don’t think artists can also be readers. my book draws me in during downtime.

car-centrism is getting out of control here

noticing far fewer obese people at Polish beaches as well as inland. i think the reasons have to do with infrastructure: very walkable cities, less fast food, less eating out in general, and the big one - cleaner food. rules that can stand up to big food.

malls stand out here. they’re full of stores, people, and look like what america’s malls would if ours never died. like many of the interesting things here, it’s because poland joined the capitalism game late. if they indeed are following the same path, their malls won’t be around long either.

Hallam had a heavy, wise answer when asked what success looked like if the resistance wins. he said you flat out cannot ask that without doing the spiritual work to deeply commit to the cause, otherwise you’ll burn out if your headspace is too individual. great talk. m.youtube.com/watch?v=_QSJ...

neat little refuge among grime #watercolor #urbansketching #art
watercolor and ink illustration of a custom-shaped entryway underneath an angled black metal exterior stairway. the main building is in disrepair, paint peeling off showing bricks, but the entryway itself is clearly taken care of - decorated with patriotic signs.

painted this one in #gouache with a touch of #watercolor. matching colors is a huge gap i'm going to work on. i'm making my way through James Gurney's book Color and Light (2010) and it's been very foundational in that respect #art
Gouache painting on 8.5 x 11" paper of heavy clouds above a suburban intersection with two cars waiting at a stoplight that juts into the sky.

enjoyed reading this one. it’s a balanced of snapshot of burlington, compared to the rabid “online a lot” accounts hating on homeless, intent on scaring people away from venturing downtown.

a much more likely thing a kidz would say
Noah Kahan's version of "The Great Divide" begins with this line: "I can't recall the last time that we talked about anything but lookin' out for cops." The Kidz Bop Kids made just the slightest of alterations, instead singing, "I can't remember the last time that we talked about anything but hanging with the cops."

always nice to hear your state mentioned, and to learn how it was perceived in the 40s/50s.
"The Lepellier house was not far out of town, I was told. There was no taxi, I was also told, and there was no one, I did not need to be told, who would offer to drive me out there. This was Vermont. But if that meant austerity toward strangers it also meant mornings of glory such as this one, in which the snow, white almost to blueness, lay like a soft comforter over the hills, and birches and pines indestructibly held their ground, rigid lines against the snow and sky, very thin and very strong like Vermonters." by John Knowles from A Separate Peace

'the smell of vitality in clothes' just got my mind going... scanning to see if I ever experienced it. referencing how our sense of smell connects with emotion so vividly is bound to connect with the reader.
“Someone knocked me down; I pushed Brinker over a small slope; someone was trying to tackle me from behind. Everywhere there was the smell of vitality in clothes, the vital something in wool and flannel and corduroy which spring releases. I had forgotten that this existed, this smell which instead of the first robin, or the first bud or leaf, means to me that spring has come. I had always welcomed vitality and energy and warmth radiating from thick and sturdy winter clothes. It made me happy, but I kept wondering about next spring, about whether khaki, or suntans or whatever the uniform of the season was, had this aura of promise in it. I felt fairly sure it didn't.”
― john knowles, from A Separate Peace

"But by now I no longer needed this [an affected accent] vivid false identity; now I was acquiring, I felt, a sense of my own real authority and worth, I had had many new experiences and I was growing." I liked this framing of growing up -- sensing an internal authority.

what saved the situation was having my pals number memorized (the only one i know) and an exceedingly kind denver stranger who offered to walk me there. such a scary reliance on phones. luckily i didn’t have one of those phone wallet cases or i’d have felt even more naked.

went to colorado for a music fest this weekend with some old buds. en route on a train, i sketched, quietly self-congratulating myself for not doom-scrolling. then proceeded to rush off at my stop, forgetting my phone. ooooh the terror. an unknown city with no address to the airbnb 1.5 miles away.

i need to set up a structure to pushback on UXers using a/b tests as a crutch for decision paralysis. they often get proposed when we can’t reach consensus and ‘the data’ becomes the decion-maker, sidestepping ownership.

phew, the powerful concoction of art + poetry givebutter.com/c/red-white-...
painting of a young boy riding his bike in a cowboy hat next to his shadow, a full grown cowboy. Snippet from the linked poem:

Do not betray
the moreness in you.

Do not kneel
at the altar of almost.

Do not abandon the enormity
that has survived inside you
like a cathedral
built entirely
from lightning.

Do not take lightly
your wideness,
the impossible orchard,
the stubborn green thing
that kept growing
even when no one clapped for the bloom.
