Australia has an opportunity to get the clean energy transition right, and minimise conflict between infrastructure and our unique biodiversity. To succeed, we must commit to measuring the impact of low-carbon energy projects on the environment. Conservationist Steven Nowakowski is doing just that.

Climate change isn’t just an environmental challenge. It threatens our economies and living standards too. Europe’s extreme summer could cost its economy €180 billion, about 1% of GDP. It’s a stark reminder of the stakes: a warming planet means growing costs for people, economies and nature.

Europe at 'breaking point' as extreme summer dries up waterways
Experts say Europe's heatwaves this summer have been "exceptional", causing riverbeds across the continent to dry up. Now the flow-on effects are being felt economically.

Producing meat currently requires vast amounts of land, contributes to deforestation and leaves our food system vulnerable to extreme weather and disease. Cultivated meat offers another way: real meat, with the potential for a much smaller environmental footprint.

What is cultivated meat, how does it taste, and could growing real meat without raising and slaughtering animals help build a more sustainable and resilient food system?

Data centres and the future we want
The pragmatic bargain Australia should strike to balance new development with environmental and social protections.
031
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Data centres are a hot topic right now. The tension is between the important role data centres play as the backbone of our modern society and their environmental impacts, especially their water and energy use. We believe Australia can get the balance right with appropriate regulations.

WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Data centres are essential infrastructure for modern society, but they come with environmental trade-offs. A blanket "no" isn't a serious strategy. The better approach is smart regulation that requires new clean energy, greater efficiency and responsible development.

One of the unexpected consequences of making the air safer to breathe by reducing aerosol pollution has been a warmer planet. Reducing these aerosols has made the air significantly safer to breathe. But, the planet is now more absorbent of solar energy. Less reflective = more heat absorbed
theconversation.com
Reduced air pollution is making clouds reflect less sunlight
Between 2003 and 2022, clouds over the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific became less reflective, allowing more sunlight to reach the ocean surface and causing sea surface temperatures to rise.

These events underscore the urgent need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, & the need to seriously research climate interventions like Solar Radiation Management (SRM) that could help buy us critical time as we bring our global energy & agricultural systems back within planetary boundaries.

This year's El Niño is already strengthening rapidly and could prove to be one of the strongest ever recorded. For Australia, it could increase the risk of dry conditions and extreme heat later this year and into next.

WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Our oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat from global warming. If climate change were a household budget, we've been overspending and we've put more than 90% of that debt on the ocean credit card. This warming is changing our oceans & the climate systems they help regulate.

Food innovation means we can now produce the same proteins found in milk, eggs & other foods without raising & slaughtering animals. It can reduce emissions & zoonotic disease, free up land for nature, cut water use, & improve animal welfare, all while giving people the foods they already enjoy.

WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Companies have already told parliamentary inquiries they are ready to invest if the ban is lifted. So why are we blocking one of the world’s most powerful sources of clean energy before Australians can even consider it?
120
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
That is why WePlanet Australia is calling for the nuclear ban to be lifted. Not to force nuclear onto the grid. To allow it to be modelled properly. To allow investment. To allow an honest national conversation.
130
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Gas is expensive. Gas is polluting. Gas keeps Australia tied to the old energy system at the exact moment we should be building a clean, reliable, abundant one.
120
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
So when politicians ban nuclear, they are not choosing “100% renewables”. They are choosing renewables plus gas. That means more fossil fuel infrastructure. More exposure to gas prices. More emissions than we should accept.
121
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
And no, batteries do not solve this on their own. Batteries store electricity. They do not generate it. They are vital for hours of storage. But several bad days, or a week of low wind and low sun, is a very different challenge.
130
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
That is what too many anti-nuclear campaigners leave out. They quote AEMO when it suits them. But AEMO’s plan still relies on gas being available when renewables are not generating enough power.
111
WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Australia’s official energy pathway has never really been “renewables alone”. It has been renewables backed by gas. Gas for when the wind drops. Gas for when the sun disappears. Gas for when the grid needs firm power fast.
