Climate change isn’t just an environmental challenge. It threatens our economies and living standards too. Europe’s extreme summer could cost its economy €180 billion, about 1% of GDP. It’s a stark reminder of the stakes: a warming planet means growing costs for people, economies and nature.

Europe at 'breaking point' as extreme summer dries up waterways
Experts say Europe's heatwaves this summer have been "exceptional", causing riverbeds across the continent to dry up. Now the flow-on effects are being felt economically.

Did you know nuclear power plants can run continuously for years? Darlington Unit 1 holds the world record: 1,106 days of continuous clean electricity before shutting down for scheduled maintenance. As we electrify more of our economy, reliable 24/7 clean energy will only become more important.

Producing meat currently requires vast amounts of land, contributes to deforestation and leaves our food system vulnerable to extreme weather and disease. Cultivated meat offers another way: real meat, with the potential for a much smaller environmental footprint.

What is cultivated meat, how does it taste, and could growing real meat without raising and slaughtering animals help build a more sustainable and resilient food system?

This is fine, right? Just in case, we should probably accelerate our efforts to reduce emissions while laying the scientific and governance groundwork for the possible future use of climate interventions such as solar radiation management (SRM).

Data centres are a hot topic right now. The tension is between the important role data centres play as the backbone of our modern society and their environmental impacts, especially their water and energy use. We believe Australia can get the balance right with appropriate regulations.

WePlanet Australia @weplanetaus.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Data centres are essential infrastructure for modern society, but they come with environmental trade-offs. A blanket "no" isn't a serious strategy. The better approach is smart regulation that requires new clean energy, greater efficiency and responsible development.

One of the unexpected consequences of making the air safer to breathe by reducing aerosol pollution has been a warmer planet. Reducing these aerosols has made the air significantly safer to breathe. But, the planet is now more absorbent of solar energy. Less reflective = more heat absorbed
theconversation.com
Reduced air pollution is making clouds reflect less sunlight
Between 2003 and 2022, clouds over the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific became less reflective, allowing more sunlight to reach the ocean surface and causing sea surface temperatures to rise.

Our oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat from global warming. If climate change were a household budget, we've been overspending and we've put more than 90% of that debt on the ocean credit card. This warming is changing our oceans & the climate systems they help regulate.

A majority of Aussies support nuclear energy! Polling commissioned by WePlanet Australia last month shows that a majority of Australians support developing nuclear energy in Australia. Nuclear energy provides 24/7 clean, reliable, and affordable energy independent of the weather or season.
Photo background of the Doel nuclear power plant in Belgium with a WePlanet Australia polling graphic overlaid. The headline asks: “To what extent do you support or oppose Australia developing nuclear power plants for the generation of electricity?” A line chart shows Australian polling results from June 2019 to April 2026. In the latest April 2026 result, 52% support nuclear power plants, 33% oppose, and 15% are unsure. The chart shows support above opposition in most polling periods, with support rising from 39% in 2019 to 52% in 2026. Small text notes that the polling was conducted online by Essential Research for WePlanet Australia from 22 to 26 April 2026, with 1,067 respondents.
