Our latest Station of the Nation report highlights that poverty across Wales is increasing – and women’s unequal position in society means they are more vulnerable. The new Welsh Government must ensure that the new expansion in childcare effectively supports families on the lowest incomes.
A graphic that reads: State of the Nation. Women’s poverty in Wales is on the rise.A graphic that reads: The percentage of single women in poverty increased from 20% (2024) to 23% (2025).A graphic that reads: Poverty in single parent households increased from 39% (2024) to 45% (2025). Most single parents in Wales are women.A graphic that reads: What needs to change? The new Welsh Government must mobilise the action and resources needed to end women’s poverty. This includes ensuring women can access better paid jobs, and ensuring the new expansion of childcare is flexible and affordable.

Congratulations to the newly elected members of the seventh Senedd - a momentous occasion for the 96 MSs and for Wales. We look forward to working collaboratively with you for a Wales free from gender discrimination.

As 46% of the Senedd now consists of women, the 2026 elections brought Wales a small step closer to gender parity - but progress relied on voluntary party initiatives and is fragile.

It remains crucial that the recent recommendations from the Family-Friendly and Inclusive Parliament Review are implemented to ensure that politics is as accessible as it can be, with the aim of achieving diverse and equal representation that is reflective of Wales in all its diversity.

We continue to urge parties to make use of Diverse5050's toolkit, designed to help parties become places where people of any gender or protected characteristic feel welcome and can succeed.
