1913 slang Don’t know if it is about cotton prices going up or diseased cotton or something else. (The Lexington Advertiser May 23 1913)
D. A. Killebrew ordered some new cotton seed to plant which have come up, and P. H. Zeigler said the cotton had a nickle on each leaf. Some of you men may not believe it but we have Mr. Zeigler's word for it. I think Mr. Zeigler ought to have the cake.

Does this duck figure mean anything on Trump’s lapel or is it just bad AI? This is from the “Long Live the King” Trump photo posted by The White House.

Are there any genealogists using OpenStreetMap? Is it a good alternative for mapping historical rural United States locations? #genealogy

I'd love to see all you genealogy bloggers including a "share" button for Bluesky! So many more platforms and hosting services are including it as an option. I added it to my blog - plus I ditched the one for that bird site!

I think Google AI is gaslighting me today.
Google Maps did not rename the Gulf of Mexico. This is a false claim.

There was an incident in 2025 when the Gulf of Mexico was briefly labeled as the "Gulf of America" on Google Maps for users in the United States. This change was made in response to an executive order signed by then-President Donald Trump. However, the change was quickly met with criticism and protests, and Google reverted the name back to the Gulf of Mexico.

The incident raised concerns about the potential for political influence on Google Maps, but Google has stated that it does not censor or change information for political reasons.

The two biggest hurdles for me to #degoogle: Maps - I have several pins of cemeteries & ancestors’ locations #genealogy YouTube - I watch several content creators (Minecraft, Genealogy and Tech Tutorials)

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons: -We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S. -The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous. 🧵⬇️

Gaines County has one of the lowest rates of childhood vaccination in Texas. At a local public school district in the community of Loop, only 46% of kindergarten students have gotten vaccines against measles, mumps, and rubella.

New York was also the first stop for most US immigrants in the late 19th-20th centuries. Many of their grandchildren qualify for dual citizenship-by-descent, particularly for NY's large Italian and Irish populations. If those files proving descent become inaccessible... 😬 bsky.app/profile/btwn...

Layers of information in an archival document: - What is said - What is not said - What is alluded to - What is omitted intentionally (and unintentionally) - What is misleading - What is ambiguous - What is highlighted - What is downplayed - What is weaponized - What is unintelligible today ...

This is becoming absurd—federal employees are now being told to remove pronouns from their email signatures. We will always stand by our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, no matter how many things we’re asked to delete or change. Inclusivity is at the core of who we are.

Our new BIRLS.org site, which lets researchers search millions of records of deceased US veterans and also order their full C-Files from the VA, has now been online (and out of beta) for a month. And so far, in this first month, we've enabled over 3400 researchers to file over 9100 FOIA requests.
