Surrounded by a curlicued black border, Rogue & Vagabond is written in large letters in the centre. Rogue is in a rough newspaper-type font, and a dark-haired smirking man in a brown coat is half-leaning on the E. I highly recommend This is Fascism by Rosan Smits: short and to the point, and mostly importantly gives a starting point for what politicians, journalists and the everyday person can and should be doing to hold the line. (I don’t pretend this can’t happen in […] [Original post on mastodon.au]
The strongest barrier against fascism is our refusal to participate in
its hatred and dehumanization. You don’t have to be a professional
activist to help raise it. Nor should you just leave it to journalists or
politicians. Resistance is about how people think and act. That is our
starting point and that’s where each of us has a choice to make. Don't
be a bystander. Become an upstander.
But we don’t have to continue down this path. History not only tells
us how fascism can advance, it also shows us that it can be stopped. By
people who stand up for each other. By people who choose facts over
fiction, connection over division, and humanity over dehumanization.

By people who understand: this is fascism.

Why does this cover simultaneously imply he’s a merman and it’s an historical, and then the blurb is a contemporary about flower shop rivals??? #books #BookCovers #romancelandia
A book called He Loves Me Not, with a heterosexual couple in the classic clinch pose from historical novels - on a bed of roses, she’s wearing a flowing silky blue gown with her thigh and shoulders bare, he’s naked except for…purple glittery pants…wait, those aren’t pants, it’s a tail! There’s a subtitle that reads “a monster bait romance”. The blurb just goes on about rival flower shops in a plot entirely stolen from that Meg Ryan and Tom hanks movie where she runs an indie bookstore and he’s the big chain. It doesn’t even mention the ocean!

#PennedPossibilities 912. Describe your MC to us. Craggy. Kind of thuggish looking. Probably owes a lot to Joel from The Last of Us (tv version), now that I think about it, right down to having to look after a traumatised teenager.
‘Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance,’ she slowly read.
 ‘Rugged?’

Eliza had had the same short-thrift education as him, at school just long enough to learn her letters before being kept home to care for her youngest siblings and scrub laundry. Under Salvation Army schooling, her reading had come along immensely, but she was pronouncing the troublesome word one-syllabled.

‘Rug-ged,’ Gabe said.

She looked down at the reds and blues of the rug, and then back at the page. ‘Rugged countenance?’ she repeated, correctly now, but even more dubiously.

Gabe looked at the two portraits bookending the room. The one over the hearth was of a child so smooth-faced, ruddy-cheeked and beflowered that Gabe had thought him a little girl until Mrs Hunter had corrected him. The one facing it across the length of the library was of the very Sir Thomas Isham who had been such a great collector on his Grand Tour. He was also extremely smooth-faced.

Tor, leaning back in his seat and watching Gabe’s dilemma with some amusement, gave a low laugh. ‘You’re looking at the portraits like you’ve never seen a mirror. Miss Ward, your uncle has a rugged countenance. The very epitome of the concept, I should say.’

‘Oh, the chin?’ Eliza said.

‘The chin, the nose – all of it, really.’

Eliza read the line again, finishing it this time. ‘Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance that was never lighted by a smile.’ She lowered the book and shot Gabe a very cheeky look.
