industry is always so gd opaque, and this is another example of how randomly things can happen. To date this is the only one of my books in translation, and it was not a sale generated by my former agent’s doing. I hope I’ll know the full story of how it came to the attention of that press someday.

Though I had an agent at the time the small press in Korea reached out to inquire about foreign rights, it was 100% generated by the Korean press itself. My former agent managed the deal through her agency but it was not something she or I or anyone sought. I say this because the publishing

That first inquiry came from CAA, which I had to look up, and then I was like 😯. Today, my kid is going to CAA for a film mentorship program, and I think it's hilarious that she's going to walk into CAA before I ever will 😆

Back in 2015, not long after Excavation first came out, I was hiking in Griffith Park and got an email that stopped me in my tracks. It was the first time I was contacted about film/tv rights for the book. (Little did I know that it would go nowhere, and I’d get more inquiries like that one…)

Turns out I have ongoing family matters to attend to in Arkansas, so maybe I’ll make a partial writing residency out of it next year if this one doesn’t pan out…

Wendy C. Ortiz @wendyortiz.com · 30/09/2026
Some residencies let you defer, this one doesn’t. I’m still feeling kinda neutral about it. Like, yay, I got a full fellowship to a residency! 😁 but can’t do it unless they can accommodate me for the dates I requested! 🫤

While I’m waiting for the writing residency that awarded me dates I can’t do (not the dates I requested) + the award of a full fellowship to figure out if they can accommodate the dates I originally requested, the other writing residency I applied to rejected me…

Using Alt text is so sexy. It shows that you have patience, empathy and confidence, because taking time to describe what you are sharing, to me, shows that you just know what you’re about to be posting is important enough to be accessible to everyone.

When I was preparing to leave twitter I delighted in watching the follower count go down as other people left or unfollowed me knowing I or they were leaving. Now I delight in my relatively consistent number of newsletter subscribers because it feels more real to me, and makes me keep it more real.

When I deleted my twitter account I think I had 10k followers 😬 Here I hover near 3k, which happened over 3 years, I think? My newsletter, when it was on substack, had 600 subscribers. Since moving to Buttondown in 2024, the newsletter has 595 subscribers.

And Bluesky? Idk. I agree with folks who maintain it’s “not twitter circa early 2010s.” I want *that* back but I think social media platforms have become something altogether different and *that* may not be able to exist on current iterations again. Like, ever again…

It’s funny how when I contemplate an extended absence from social media, I feel like I want to be on social media much more preceding the absence. My current intention is to be off social media for all of 2027.
