WE HAVE AVOCET NEWS!!! An Avocet spotted at RSPB Middleton Lakes has been confirmed as the oldest ever recorded in the UK. At 36 years old, it's lived more than five times longer than the species' average lifespan. First ringed in 1990, it's still out there doing Avocet things. Go on Avocet. 😍
An Avocet strides across the edge of a wetland, one leg lifted mid-step as if caught in an elegant strut. Its striking black-and-white plumage and long upturned bill stand out against a softly blurred backdrop of green reeds.

It's World Swift Day! ❤️ Swifts raise their chicks high in eaves or nestboxes, returning to the same site year after year. When the young fledge, they launch into open air... & just keep going! They’ll remain airborne for the next two or three years, until it’s time to breed themselves.

Curlew chicks roam soon after hatching, downy and long-legged on open ground. Parents guide them with soft calls, rising to defend them with looping alarm flights if needed. #SpringStories

A small and very soft-looking Chiffchaff just landed in your feed... adorable! 📷 Tony Stanford
A tiny Chiffchaff perches on a slender reddish-brown stem, its round, pale-yellow chest puffed out and soft feathers glowing in the light, looking like a perfectly fluffed ball of sunshine with legs.

Behold...the Lapwing of contemplation has appeared in your feed. 📷 Tony Stanford
A Lapwing stands alone at the edge of a choppy shoreline, long crest feathers trailing majestically in the breeze. It gazes out over the water, deep in mysterious thought.

From the birdsong in our streets to rivers that run clean: nature matters. And it’s under threat. In 3 days time, on Weds 9 July, we’re heading to Westminster to call for urgent action for people, climate, and nature. Will you be a part of this moment? www.theclimatecoalition.org/act-now-chan...
A Water Vole sits snugly inside a mossy pipe at the water’s edge, holding a strip of green leaf between its paws. Ferns and lush greenery surround the entrance, and the calm water below reflects its round face and tiny hands. A glimpse of the wild we’re fighting to protect.

Brain not ready. Please try again after coffee. #MondayMotivation 📷 @carlbovisnature.bsky.social
A Wren clings to a wooden post with eyes shut and feathers fluffed, looking half-asleep and motionless against a clear blue sky. Its slumped posture and closed eyes give the impression of someone not quite awake yet as if mid-boot-up on a Monday morning, waiting for caffeine to kick in.

Today our singer spotlight is on the Wren: proof that size means nothing in the dawn chorus! Tiny, fast, and loud, listen for Wrens pouring out a whole string of notes - without stopping for breath. What birds have been filling your morning today? 🎵

The Romans called it Floralia and the Celts named it Beltane, but since medieval times in Britain it has been known as May Day, a celebration of the coming of summer complete with maypoles, morris dancing and gathering flowers as in Laura Knight's work from 1910.
