I'm literally writing about this case right now for my next book SLEUTH-HOUND, about Joseph Bell, the Scottish doctor who inspired the creation of Sherlock Holmes, and the milieu of medicine, mystery, and crime that surrounded him. I can't wait to share this book with you in 2026!

Late medieval urine wheel, c.1500. Before stethoscopes and x-rays, a pot of piss was an important diagnostic tool. The wheel usually consisted of 20 different colours ranging from "white as well-water" to "black as very dark horn." The colour was associated with various ailments.
A urine wheel featuring different colored urines and corresponding diagnoses, and a medieval image of a doctor in the middle holding a patient's urine flask.

THREAD on the practice of "SIN-EATING" 🧵 In 19th-century Britain, it was customary during a funeral to provide biscuits for mourners to take away. They were often wrapped and sealed in black wax. Here you see an example of a funeral biscuit wrapper from 1828. 1/9
A wrapper that has yellowed with age. On it is text that reads: "Biscuits for the funeral of Mrs. Oliver. Died November 7th, 1828. Aged 52." Along with a prayer.
