A glorious morning riding around London, visiting three of the London Cycling Festival hubs - in Westminster, City of London and Tower Hamlets. The festival, with branding by We Made This, has rides, stalls and events right across the city. Great to see everyone out enjoying themselves 😁.

After more than 15 years, Hoxton Street Monster Supplies will close this Saturday. You’ve got until then to get a final jar of Thickest Human Snot! Huge thanks to everyone who worked & volunteered with the shop. And to everyone who shopped there too, and thus supported the Ministry of Stories!
A graphic announcing the closure of Hoxton Street Monster Supplies. It reads: "Horrifyingly, we must imminently close. Last chance to buy in the shop or online: Saturday 18 July 2026 > monstersupplies.org. Thank you to all our customers, monstrous and human. We hope to see you again, in this life, or the next."

Typewriter Manuals has pdfs of two Caligraph manuals, but neither feature the sentence. The manual for Caligraph No.3 does mention a Book of Caligraph Lessons – but I can't find that anywhere! Is it in it? Or in a different Caligraph pamphlet? site.xavier.edu/polt/typewri...
A scan of a page from the manual for The Caligraph Special No.3 typewriter. The relevant section reads 'Instruction Books. As there is a demand for a good instrnction book, for the use of learners and operators on the Caligraph, we carry a Book of Caligraph Lessons, which
teaches a systematic method of using the fingers and becoming expert upon the machine. Price, 50 cents.'

@aresluna.org Typewriter folks, I need help! I'm trying to track down the early instances in print of the ‘Quick Brown Fox’ pangram. It occurs in Illustrative Shorthand by Mrs L Bronson (1888). She notes it comes from a Caligraph typewriter pamphlet, but not which one! archive.org/details/illu...
A scan of a page from Illustrative Shorthand by Mrs L Bronson (1888), featuring the pangram 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.' The preceding text reads: 'These directions are for the Caligraph, but will apply as well to any other machine by a very little practice on some points of difference in the manner of spacing and using capital letters. Study the pamphlet accompanying each machine and become thoroughly acquainted with the mechanism and the construction of every part of it, that you may be able to keep it in working order, for if your machine is not in perfect order it will be impossible for you to do perfect work.'A scan of a section of a page from Illustrative Shorthand by Mrs L Bronson (1888) which reads: 'The above sentences were selected from the Caligraph pamphlet. After practicing well and faithfully on them, take the business forms, hereinbefore given, and practice on them until you can write them without hesitation; then have some one dictate to you until you are able to write sixty words a minute. That is professional work.'

A photograph of ‘Pearblossom Highway’ by David Hockney, 1986 - showing a road running through an American dessert, with street signs, trees, and text on the road which reads ‘Stop Ahead’. The piece is a collage of hundreds of photographs, playing with the sense of a fixed perspective.

As someone called Al, AI headlines can be confusing…
A headline that reads "State of AI in Design", but where the capital I of AI looks the same as a lowercase l, leading to possible confusion for people called Al, and their friends.

“A cold douche from the fountain of truth“ – a description of the nine o‘clock news, in a piece by Sir Ernest Baker from the BBC Year Book, 1944 www.worldradiohistory.com/UK/BBC/BBC-A... cc. @iandunt.bsky.social
An excerpt from the BBC Year Book 1944, which reads: “For most of us, it is its news that matters—matters above everything else. There is little but praise to be given to its collection and presentation of news. It seems to most of us well done—honestly done—objectively done. To turn on the nine o'clock news is to turn on a cold douche from the fountain of truth.

It was also named the Number 1 Kids’ Shop in London by Time Out magazine.
A press clipping from Time Out magazine, listing Hoxton Street Monster Supplies as the best kids shop in London. The text reads: "The Best Kids Shop. Hoxton Street Monster Supplies. Gloriously ghoulish treats for little devils Purveyor of quality goods for monsters of every kind, this curious little shop is just the ticket for vampires, werewolves or humans on the prowl for a jar of Thickest Human Snot or a pot of Salt Made from Tears of Anger. You'll find cabinets piled with creepy preserves (which are really lemon curd, gourmet sea salt and the like) as well as stories by famous authors. Proceeds support the Ministry of Stories creative writing centre set up for local children by writers Ben Payne, Lucy McNab and Nick Hornby. Just mind the invisible cat on your way out."
