A rat is undegoing electroconvulsive therapy. Not the new, safe kind either. He has two electrodes held to the sides of his head by two gloved hands. Theres one small one stuck onto a shaved spot on his forehead. A third hand holds his jaw shut around a green bite guard. Theres drool and white foam dripping from his mouth. Didn't think posting this write-up about my love for drawing returning would be this much of a hassle, but here we are. Hope it's readable at last and making sense. lol TL:DR: I'm drawing with love and passion again after years of not doing so. Expect more art from me in the future.

It's funny how only days after I posted this, I had this big epiphany that I shouldn't be fighting tooth and nail against the anxiety trigger stuff. Instead I should treat it the same way I learned to deal with other "big" emotions like grief...etc. Because fighting it only makes it flare up and affect you more. So I sit with it, keep it on the surface, accept that it's here to stay and I'm not going to push it away. Does that make sense?

This doesn't mean that I just lean into it and let myself freak out and stuff, because that freaking out only happened because I didn't want the anxiety there in the first place. Instead I just... try and accept that it's here, a part of me and won't go away. It's been useful long ago but those times have passed. I wanted it gone. To draw again how I used to before it became such a big aspect of my life. It went on like that for close to a decade.

Turns out all this fighting only made it worse in the end.

Because after I finally accepted it, I felt a huge weight lifted off me. I actually cried a little in relief and then went to draw that (not) zonked puppy groping piece. Suddenly it was so much easier to draw again. I haven't felt this motivated in a long time.

This most likely isn't a "omg I'm cured" moment, but at the very least I think I figured out how to deal with the anxiety in a healthy way.

The other side of the coin was my crippling perfectionism. No doubt fueled by that very same anxiety. I was always so hung up about good anatomy and perspective. Before even drawing a single line, I turned to posing dolls to come up with ideas because whatever I drew without references just looked wrong and didn't meet whatever unreasonably high standards I set for myself.

Basically I flipped my whole approach over the head by focusing on the overall feeling of a piece and the drawing process first and foremost. Only after drawing up a rough sketch that felt right to me have I turned to references for anatomy and stuff. It sounds like common sense when I write it out but believe me when I say I've rarely had this carefree and loose attitude towards drawing before. lol Or at the very least not consistently since 2014 ('15 marked when it all went downhill)

So yeah, I'm thinking there will be more 2d output from me again. I definitely plan to continue working on 3d stuff, but for now there's a lot of things I wanna get out of my system. There's a good chance it will be darker than what I posted years ago since my interests changed over the years. But I'll make a proper post/journal about it later.

After really not vibing with Krita's UI and different hotkeys the first time around, I gave it another earnest try about a month ago and I honestly don't wanna go back to CSP now. It feels much more versatile than CSP and I can't really explain but the brushes have such a nice feel to them.
