btw did i tell u about my trip to the ewaste recyclers last saturday? walked there with a bunch of junk thinking i could only get HKD35 for a fistful of ddr2 sticks, but because the bag of power adapters and the ancient fujitsu laptop i can’t boot was worth something i came out +HKD85 richer.

I’ve learned a few months ago that TVB has a Red Button service on their second TV channel (TVB Plus) that delivers news and weather on an overlay while you watch their shows. I only got it to work on a 2013 Hisense 3DTV. I’m not sure why the Android TVs aren’t picking them up.

Before listening to this album I always thought Taeko Ohnuki’s unfiltered voice in the Sunshower and Mignonne albums gave off an honest and vulnerable vibe, but as I continue listening to Sugar Babe it dawns on me that she really just sounds like that. It’s as if she’s singing far away from the mic.

Ok let me talk about the album for a bit: Sugar Babe is the 5pc band featuring Showa music icons Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Ohnuki. This is obviously the Tats we know and love from the hits such as Ride On Time and Jody but I’m surprised by Taeko who AFAIK started with this band before going solo.

Booted the Sony Blu-Ray Player I dug up from the dumpster months ago and learned it had a fucking XrossMediaBar. Using it with an optical link to my sound bar to play the Sugar Babe album I bought from my record man.

there are two films called "runner" this year: "The Runner" starring Wonder Woman and "Runner" starring Lightning McQueen. if you're on Kodi, Plex, or Jellyfin you should check on your libraries just in case it confuses one for the other or decide to merge the two into one.

Some thing I noticed about the Forgotten Island screening here in Hong Kong: most of the Tagalog dialogue didn't get Cantonese subtitles. I suppose whoever is doing the translation only expected the film to be in English so they didn't bother hiring a Filipino for the job.

With Kung-Fu Panda in mind, which gave Dreamworks the ability to open their own Chinese animation division, I theorize this film is also serving as a foot in the door for Filipino creatives in the same manner. Imagine the animation pipeline finally having a track to Hollywood.

Also a surprise is not seeing Po in the Dreamworks title sequence, which he previously did. The Wild Robot was there. Puss in Boots was there. One of the Croods and Shrek's family were there. Was it because Kung-Fu Panda is a partially-Chinese production, and this is a partially-Filipino one?

Some brand collabs I did NOT expect in the movie: 3M's Post-it notes, Bic pens, and Polaroid's instant cameras. They could've been rebranded like Jollibee, Nike, or Vaseline. I guess Dreamworks got cash for the sponsorship. I also did not expect Francis M. I hope the Magalonas get their bag.

I do like how they leaned in with the cartoony-ness. The montages are 2D with varying styles depending on who's narrating. The reactions and emotion bubbles look like they're yoinked from Japanese anime of the era. The fucking Akira slide.

Another thing I don't like about the film is its liberal use of angles and "focal lengths". Feels very dynamic and in-your-face, but it's a personal gripe. Maybe because I'm a thirtysomething now. I can feel the speed and grossness confuse the nerves in my head.

the tiyanak is a baby-shaped demon instead of a demon-shaped baby, and the shokoy... I like his dehydrated form takes inspiration from discoveries of fossilized sirena in the provinces. Glad not all of them were spoiled in the trailer so everyone gets to see them with fresh eyes. Spoiled you tho.

There's plenty of artistic license with the depictions of the creatures: the kapre can't smoke but they're made to look like they smoke weed, the duwende are less elven and more Cute Prince from Adventure Time, Batiba and Manang look like they're two opposing moms in an ABS-CBN primetime soap...

If this is a concern for you I suggest turning off the university communist within before watching the film. With that said, this is a great isekai: two girls sent to a fantasy realm of folkloric creatures in a tropical island, on an adventure to get back home as renewed people.

One can easily clock most of the sprinkles of Tagalog dialogue not coming from main cast is coming from people who don't speak the language regularly, which does sound off alarm bells in my head about the pretentiousness of westerners making cosplay of one's culture.

Take the school for example. Uniforms were fine, but everything else felt like American public school. Tiled floors? An OHP in the classroom? A talent show in an enclosed auditorium? Where's the sun? First of all, everyone's concerns are indeed valid: this is a Fil-Am film. If you take away the smorgasbord of Pinoy references you're left with an immigrant's story of keepsakes and the idea of found family. So many things felt inherently American the film couldn't shake the stench off.

It’s half-price at the cinemas today because of the PRC Establishment Holiday so I went to the cinema near my house to get a wicked cheap ticket for the day’s first screening of Forgotten Island. Battery’s about to run out, so I’ll write my thoughts about the film as a thread once I get home.
