In my rush of applying to ten grad programs, I forgot to click the "opt out of being able to see letters of recommendation" box on one (1) of them and my advisor at the time was extremely pissed. I promised him in person I wouldn't request it.

We replaced two ceiling fan+light units last year (and a third we need to do), and none of them take normal bulbs anymore, they're integrated LED units. And we got the most basic ass ones: single switch on/off, pull chains for light and fan, no remote.

In many cases you can change which side the hinge is on if the factory default is inconvenient for you. Same with single-door refrigerators.

Like sure, I'd love to be financially sound enough to garden and cook all day. But to pay the mortgage for my house and garden, and maybe dream of retirement, I need to continue to be paid as a mid-career engineer.

...suddenly without employment (e.g. paychecks, healthcare) and their career skills are suddenly worthless. Going from an early-/mid-/late-career salaried position to hourly "unskilled" labor (all labor is skilled labor) or gig economy work can be jarring at minimum and financially ruinous at worst.

The problem is "assuming I was financially fine" is an enormous assumption in this day and age. C-suite types get big dollar signs in their eyes when they think that they can reduce headcount through the use of AI. And if an entire industry does it at once, that's a lot of real humans ...

Over two years ago I posted about this exact spot and how horribly dangerous this bridge is. When the bridge was planned neighbors lobbied heavily to make it safer. The city overruled. Now the city has failed to maintain the bare minimum it did install. They have been warned repeatedly for years.

If my 2014 PriusC were all electric it would truly be the perfect car. If they come to fruition, I'd love a Telo truck (5" shorter than my PriusC!) with their "camper shell" that basically turns the whole thing into a hatchback.

Love when a medical professional walks in and immediately goes for the hand sanitizer. Would feel a little weird about it if they shook my hand first then went straight for the sanitizer.

I briefly awaken from my social media hiatus to share progress pictures of Chubby Bear Salmon Gobble! It's a push your luck dice rolling game where you play as bears at the Katmai National Park trying to catch and eat salmon to gain weight for the winter. First up, the fish dice.
Three fish shaped dice stacked atop each other, they are the trans pride colors. First a blue four sided fish die, then a white six sided, then a pink eight sided on top.

People working minimum wage jobs might need to walk through snow to get to their jobs though? Also "snow boots" are a stand in for any consumer good, not meant to be taken absolutely literally. Replace "snow boots" with "winter jacket" or "food storage containers" or "car" and my point is the same

Weeshtable @weeshtable.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Right. You can probably do a bit of product research and get your fixed shoe/etc budget to stretch further, and price is no guarantee of quality, but the $40 snowboots from Kohl's aren't going to hold up as long as a $140 pair or Merrell's. There is an upper bound on quality at a given price point

The Costco endcap salespeople (bathroom renovations, iirc) tried to engage me when I was there over the weekend. The central aisle was crowded! I returned their "Hello, how are you?" but kept on my way. One of them commented "Wow I've never seen a customer be so rude!" I'm still baffled by this.

My very first question was "Do you mean electrons and positrons?" and the answer was "no". Very firmly meant protons. Truly my most bizarre experience from grad school.

A college freshman wandered into my (grad student) office in the Physics building once. Asked why electrons and protons don't annihilate. Easy enough I thought. Proceeded to waste an hour and a half of my and my officemates' time as we kept trying to dig down to some sort of base level knowledge

I spent a lot of time listing to Behind the Bastards when driving back and forth 9 hours at a time during the homebuying process for an interstate move. Not exactly uplifting. If you haven't listened to Til Death Do Us Blart, that'd be a fun one to listen to in sequence.

If you're a mushroom enjoyer, might I suggest this Mary-Ann Esposito recipe from 90s-era PBS. I've really been cranking the mushroom dial up on this over the years, I think most recently I did a pound of cremini and half a pound of shiitake. Have also used assorted other mushrooms with great success

I did drunkenly make me and my friends a bunch of pizza one night during our first year though. Mostly because pizza is the perfect drunk food and I was upset about the lack of late night slice shops having recently moved from New York State. That one good place was not close to my apartment, sadly.

Even when I lived in the Midwest for a decade, there were serviceable local spots to get a whole pie, considerably better than chains. The college town where I went to grad school even had a good by-the-slice spot.
