I took one photo. It only has four pages/two popups. They flip the page every week. I may go back next week to see the other side. It’s very whimsical. I also enjoyed the small display of popup books from the library’s collection.
A large mausoleum-like pop-up structure made of paper and glue. It’s set against a navy background. From the world’s largest popup book.

Ummm. Hmm. (From page 238 of “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” by Walter Rodney. The Verso Books edition.)
Fascism is a deformity of capitalism. It heightens the imperialist tendency towards domination which is inherent in capitalism, and it safeguards the principle of private property.
At the same time, fascism immeasurably strengthens the institutional racism already bred by capitalism, whether it be against Jews (as in Hitler's case) or against African peoples (as in the ideology of Portugal's Salazar and the leaders of South Africa).
Fascism reverses the political gains of the bourgeois democratic system such as free elections, equality before the law, and par-liaments; it also extolls authoritarianism and the reactionary union of the church with the state. In Portugal and Spain, it was the Catholic church—in South Africa, it was the Dutch Reformed church.

I enjoyed this production of “Turandot.” The singers are incredible. They’re also doing performances next weekend. The show itself is a little problematic. PoP moderates that and gives a history lesson in the program.
Poets, playwrights, and composers have now interpreted and adapted this story into many different languages, through many different time periods, and cultural lenses. The oldest rendition of Turandot was in Farsi from 12th century Persia; it then resurfaced in French in 1722, only to be turned into a play in Italian in 1762, and then further romanticised into a separate play in German in 1801. The name Turandokht was first introduced in the French story, Les Mille et un jours, and the setting of Peking (modern-day Beijing) was first used in the Italian play, Turandot instead of its historical setting of Persia. The Chinese setting was continued in Schiller's adaptation in German, and was how Puccini first experienced the play before adapting it into an opera. Puccini's librettists Adami and Simoni continued to set the story in China.
By setting the story in Peking, China, these Western storytellers used limited ideas of a faraway land they had never experienced and combined these ideas with Italian operatic traditions to create a fantastical love story. Puccini took the creative liberty to commission a set of custom-tuned gongs for Turandot after he made the same choice for his earlier opera, Madama Butterfly.
A Chinese folk song "Mo-Li-Hua" is used throughout the opera, taken from a songbox Puccini was given by Italian diplomats. Taking from Italian theatre, Puccini was likely inspired by commedia dellarte clowns as the source of inspiration for Ping, Pang, and Pong.
Times have changed and the social awareness of audiences has adjusted to the world around them. When setting a production of Turandot in China, many current audiences look at the characters of Ping, Pang, and Pong and find these comedic characters offensive for being caricatures mocking Chinese people through stereotypes. For an Italian composer to lift a folk song or not collaborate with experts in traditional instrumentation for a modern composition these days would not fly!

Pieces from “Monuments“ at MOCA Geffen in Los Angeles.
A replica of the car named General Lee from “The Dukes of Hazzard” nose down in some sand. The General Lee is named after a confederate general and the hood of the car is emblazoned with the confederate battle flag. A statue of a confederate leader after protestors covered it in paint and knocked it off of its pedestal into its head. The head is flattened. (I think it’s Robert E. Lee, but don’t quote me on that.)Part of the granite base of a Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis sculpture removed from Richmond, Virginia. It’s a lion head with a mouth covered in red paint resembling blood. Part of a granite base from another statue honoring the Confederacy. Here, however, the artist has re-carved portions of the granite base into Carolina rose petals.

This is a much more accurate way to understand the Rwandan genocide. I might need to read or re-read some things. (Yes, I know about Gourevitch’s book on the subject.)
Louise (Mushikiwabo) was profoundly offended by descriptions of the massacres as some 'mindless ethnic slaughter and "tribal" violence instead of the politically motivated, long-planned, systematic mass extermination of a people by Presidential Guards and the death squads acting under orders. The genocide was not spontaneous. It was not a savage outburst of innate African tribalism. It was the outcome of a methodical, state-orchestrated campaign over decades to dehumanise Tutsis as a means to amass power.'

Hmm. (From page 348 of “An African History of Africa.”)
There were undoubtedly powerful moral arguments by white abolitionists, such as William Wilbertorce, based on the belief that God created all men equally, which triggered widespread discussion, much heart searching and guilt in Europe and the Americas. However, new economic realities also lay behind abolition. There was a transition away from mercantile capitalism as European nations and North America began to industrialise in the early nineteenth century.
And for the Industrial Revolution to succeed, large quantities of raw materials, such as palm oil, which was vital as a lubricant for factories and machines, needed to be imported.
Since tropical materials such as cotton and rubber could be acquired in Africa, the argument for keeping the enslaved labour there instead of transporting such people elsewhere was a compelling one.
There is a strong consensus among African intellectuals that the economic motive was instrumental, even paramount, for the abolition of slavery. As Professor Allen pointed out,
'the very nations that had been involved as beneficiaries of the slave trade, Britain and the United States, were the ones leading the transition to industrial capitalism'. Certainly the continued exploitation by Europeans of African workers (even forced labour) in the decades after abolition undermines the argument that abolition was a triumph of morality.

This framing goes well past what the headline does. Their social media editor should not have that job.
Screen shot of a skeet from the Washington Post. It reads "Exclusive: Military veterans are swamping the U.S. government with dubious disability claims that are exploiting the country’s sacred commitment to compensate those harmed in the line of duty, according to a Post investigation." That's contentious framing that goes further than the article's headline, which reads "How some veterans exploit 193 billion dollar V A program, due to lax controls."
